Mysterious Stain

Hi Everyone

Not sure if anyone can help with this, but following a service at my dealer we noticed the appearance of some stains behind the bathroom sink in my 2015 Swift. We reported it to the dealer, whom denied all knowledge and could not confirm the cause of the stain. Its not damp or grease and will not be removed with various different cleaners. I approached Swift for answer, because if this staining wasn't caused during the service by the dealer, and there is no trace of damp, then it could be a material fault. Swift rejected my claim from the photos sent. Having requested a solution from both the dealer and Swift I am getting nowhere with either party. Anybody have a clue or has similar stains? or can offer advise for the next step with the Dealer/Swift

    Have you got Alde heating?  Has the fluid been changed? Has some pink fluid been spilt near the sink and an attempt made to wipe it off?

    No blown air heating!

    I’ve seen that before. It’s the colour the wallpaper paste goes when it gets damp.

    We had it around the front side windows of our Coachman where the rain poured in due to wrong sealant being used to fit the windows.🙄

    In your case, LG, I would suggest it’s caused by splashes from the basin and/or taps or from steam condensing on the wall. I doubt it's a build quality issue (other than a poor design) or anything to do with servicing. In your shoes I’d fit some sort of splashback if I was 100% sure there was no water ingress.

    as Tin says, get some small tiles and put a strip across. stupid idea having wallpaper against a sink unit and water.

    Thanks all, not sure this back wall is wall paper. It feels like a thin laminate melamine type material. Hence if the material has dis-coloured or paste has soaked through then surely its a material fault? I though about covering with some kind of splashback material/ sticky back plastic, but the wife needs to approve first!

    I think you’ll find it's a thick vinyl paper. When it gets wet and dries over a period of time, something happens to the paste - perhaps a form of fungus develops - but the result is that pink stain.

    It's not a material fault as such but the fault lies in using paper that close to the wash basin. 

    You'll save yourself a lot of stress by covering it in something more practical such as a plastic splash back.

    Thanks everyone for the advice. Looks like I will have put plastic splash back on.

    The best looking 'splash back' I've seen was mosaic type tiny squares of tiles on peel off sheets in a variety of colours.

    It is mould, not all mould is black. You need more heat AND ventilation. A splashback will not cure the problem, albeit might mask or hide it for a while.

    thanks R2B not sure the gold will pass the wife's taste test! I was thinking white mosaic peel off like JwJ comments trying to find some on the tinterweb

    Hi Flatcoat, I don't think it's mould as it's impossible to wipe off or even spread it when wiped. The paste theory I think is probably the best route I got. I will have to hide it with a splash back. Dealer & Swift not interested on 3 year old van! Not surprised!
