Hi All,

We're booked into Lady Margarets Club Site ay Chirk this weekend for our 1st tour of the year.

Some advice please as this is our 1st visit here.

How far is the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct from the site  by foot?  A friend went a few years ago and seems to think i'll be able to walk via the canal. What is the TV reception like, can you recommend a pitch number where its good or a pitch to avoid (we'd prefer to be close to the toilet block). How far a walk is Chirk (we don't have a car & my partner has reduced mobility).

Thanks in advance.

The aqueduct is walkable but if your partner has reduced mobility I'd drive up the road a bit & park here. Cross the canal & turn left.

The aqueduct is a fair walk, it usually takes us a good hour or just over; yes, you can walk all the way to it along the canal.

From memory TV reception is not that good, I think the pitches opposite the loo-block might be ok, but can't remember 100%, sorry.

The walk to Chirk takes us about 15 minutes, it's about a mile.  Not a lot there, a few shops, Co-op, couple of pubs.

The site is adjacent to Chirk Castle, and although the castle is not open at this time of year, the grounds are, and it is huge, with lots of paths.

The station is about 5-10 minutes walk, with trains to Chester, not sure where to in the other direction.

Thanks MM, it'll be just be me doing the walk and I'm fine walking longer distances so is it possible to walk directly along the canal from Chirk?

Yes it's possible to walk along the canal. If you turn left as you leave the site (obviously when walking) & walk along the back of the site to the main road, turn left & the Chirk aqueduct is just up the road .... you really can't miss it 😊

The  Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is about three and a half miles from the Club site along the towpath. That is via joining the canal near to Chirk Station. Its a nice walk the other way over the less intimidating Chirk Aqueduct!!!

There is one hardstanding pitch right opposite the toilet block, the only problem we found with that pitch was that people from behind tended to walk across the pitch. We were using a satellite dish and it was one of the last pitches clear view of the sky but we were there in the summer so neither might be an issue at this time of year.

FD have you decided to keep the Bailey as a while ago you mentioned you might put it up for sale?

We live nearby and do that walk regularly and depending on your mobility, we walk across the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct and all the way on to Llangollen and get the bus back to the car at the start point.......

But I seem to vaguely remember something in the local press about it being closed for repairs after the recent tragedy.....

I found this on a google search.......

Might be worth you trying to check up before you set off.....

We were at Chirk last year in January and it was closed then from just before the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct; we weren't aware of it until we got closer, so had to walk all the way round on the road, a steep climb from what I remember!

Thanks for posting, we're also due to go there soon, useful info.

The Whitehouses tunnel is also on the way from Chirk to the aqueduct, if I remember right?

Yes, just after the marina as you walk from the Chirk direction.

Not quite as much fun as the tunnel in the other direction, it's shorter, we used to take the kids through them both with torches and switch them off half way ( we use the phone now!), but the dog fell in the water and I had to rescue him in the pitch black!

Thanks for that, Tintent. Know what you mean about the other tunnel, been through it a few times!

That poor dog, falling in the water. Can't have been easy to get him out in that tunnel, well done.

We had the same thing happen to our dog, Tintent. Fortunately he was on his lead so I just tugged him back onto the path, and no harm done.

Hi David, We've still got our Bailey and we do love it. We are going to the NEC show next month to look at Caravans but right now we think we'll keep our MH and work around my wife's mobility issue by taking our Car with us or visiting sites that have good public transport.

As regards Lady Margarets we had a great time and we thought it a great site. The Aqueduct was closed until Feb 8th so I couldn't walk across it but we will visit LM's again and I'll walk to it then. Thanks to all for the replies.

Lady Margaret's is in a good location , well placed for NT sites at Chirk Castle and Erddig. If background noise bothers you I would avoid the pitches in the woods , there's a large wood chip plant at the back and it operates throughout the night.
