Scam Warning known as Sextortion

Some of you may have read about this.  Google it if you wish; it makes interesting reading and, believe it or not, I've been targeted with an email which purports to come from your own account telling you that the sender has a video of you watching porn etc., and demanding money not to release it.  They also say they can see everything on your screen.

For somebody not too savvy this email looks very worrying but, for me, one of the give aways was that my monitor doesn't have a camera.

Beware - just ignore it.

As a non porn watcher I think I might guess it was a scam. Anyway Mrs WN would just laugh at anyone trying to blackmail me with that. Not sure what that says about me though.undecided

    Thanks for the thread J.

It makes a change from your internet from BT has a problem (it must have as we have Virgin Media).

Nowadays to these calls I just say at the start 'to save time shall I give you my bank details now?'

We have a tiny little stick-on thingy which covers our webcam so it can be switched on for Skype conversations and switched off at any other time.  They were given away free somewhere, so we got some for both our laptops.

But I think they'd find my viewing habits much less interesting, and I certainly can't imagine being blackmailed about Caravanning Forums, Sudoku websites, or knitting and crochet groups!  "I saw you 'like' a post on Club Together which was written by (x).............., pay me £20 or I'll tell all your friends"!!!!sealed

The one I received a year ago or so, was demanding payment in bit coins and gave instructions on how to buy them. I forwarded it to the City of London Police’s National Fraud Intelligence Bureau and sent a reply saying I had done so. Although then noticed on the police site that they said you should not do that. Send a reply that is, not contact them, they want as much info as possible as it helps build up a more complete picture of this sort of crime.

They are only fishing,  If it is land line do no answer, just put phone down and block if you can. If it is on a mobile, or  email  block them.
They have no idea if you looking at porn etc  they know they wil come across some one who is, and hopefully they are naive enough to swallow the hook
