I watched Simon Callow reading A Christmas Carol on the BBC the other day. I thought it was very good. We had to enact this tale at school nearly every year and it's ingrained on my brain but I still love the story. Did anyone else see it? The fact that Simon Callow does two performances a day reading the story is quite a feat but it's done so well. smile

It was in the news today about an original copy which is going on sale. It cost five shillings then, which in modern day value is about £26 but I imagine it will go for a tidy sum. Simon Callow also featured in the report.

I  seem  to  recall  that  Simon  Callow  has  enjoyed  a  long  connection  with  Charles  Dickens'  Christmas  Stories,  and  not  marred  his  own  reputation  in  so doing.

I'm a bit of a Christmas Carol fan. I have four different DVDs. There's the Alistair Sim version, then Patrick Stewart, George C Scott, and of course the most accurate version by the Muppets and Michael Cainesmile

Which is best? All of them have their high points and all good to me and  I watch all of them over December, but the best Scrooge (IMHO) is George C Scott while the best overall film is the Alistair Sims version.

The book is now part of the GCSE English syllabus and while doing supply work the week before Christmas I actually got paid to watch the Patrick Stewart version - twicesmile

Bonus questions: which actress played the same part in the Patrick Stewart and George Scott versions?

    Correct 10 pointssmile

aka Letitia Cropley. Also quick connection but IMHO the best Old Joe was the one played by Trevor Peacock (no no no no, yes) in the Patrick Stewart version.

I  used  to  do  occasional  Snap  Inspections  of  'Change,  Rocky  to  ensure  the  cleaning  harridans  replaced  the  fouled  straw  with  fresh  bales  at  least  once  every  month.  If  they  were  not  carefully  supervised  they'd  filch  'em  and  trade  them  for  Mother's  Ruin  at  a  moments  notice.  Mess'rs  Scrooge  &  Marley,  et al,  did  like  fresh  straw  to  help  keep  their  feet  warm  and  stop  any  dropped  coin  from  rolling  away.  STANDARDS  MUST  BE  UPHELD !!yell

I tried to get your work over the centuries recognised Muscles but King James 1st accused you of aiding Guido Fawkes by supplying the gunpowder. My entreaties were rejected☹️. I’ll never give up until I get you recognised👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻
