Esso Card VAT

well after following the recommendation that I could save 5-8 pence per litre on fuel by getting an esso card imagine my surprise when I got my first invoice and found that the prices quoted do not include vat. I ended up paying 12 pence more than the esso pump price and nearly 18 pence more than I could have got the fuel at the local supermarket. Seems to me that it’s a big con. Needless to say I shan’t be using it again. Shame on you for recommending it.

Have you checked and read through all the paperwork? I know you've signed up now and learnt a very hard lesson if the fact that the savings quoted were net of VAT was not mentioned in maybe worth pursuing with the club??

I did not investigate the offer at all but VAT flashed through my mind, businesses generally price net of VAT.

There is a thread on the discussions section running and someone has put a link to your story to raise awareness.

I have just looked at the T&C's and no mention of VAT being added. Having said that many companies will list VAT separately, especially if they also deal with other customer who can claim the VAT back. Whilst I have not spent a lot of time looking at this offer I understand you are informed by text or email the fuel prices for the coming week? Are you saying that the price you were charged is higher than this weekly bulletin price? On other forums there seem to be some very happy customers using this card. Perhaps you need to contact the people running the Esso Card to see what they say and come back here if there is still a problem and I am sure Rowena will pass the information on to the relevant department.

I wonder if you received the correct card? I skim read the offer this morning but assumed VAT was included not an extra. Might be wrong 😉

think you must have done something wrong ie looked at price of normal fuel and put premium in instead and that's what you've payed for. trading standards and the advertising authority would take them to court for doing what you say they have done. check your receipts again and if your correct then give Esso a call.

Can we please keep comments in this thread purely to the VAT element. There is the main thread for general comments.

    Thanks

The figures below are copied and pasted from an email from Essocard for a purchase I made in early December..... The actual receipt at the time was for £22.60 but I was charged the amount below.

VAT is taken into account. smile

    20% VAT £ 4.27

    Total Net £ 17.08

    Grand Total: £ 21.35

Why have you removed comments and then changed the thread heading when the previous heading clearly stated Esso Card with no mention of VAT?  I always thought a moderator is supposed to be neutral?  No wonder so many people stop posting on this forum!

Surely it would have been more appropriate for the comments to have been removed to another thread and with a link to that thread  Hopefully Rowena takes note of this an reprimands those responsible.

I think there must be 2 types of card in circulation this is what i see on my Esso Card from my account

    DIESEL [ 18-12-2018 10:25:00 ] £1.263 45.69 £57.71

and the price £57.71 is exactly what was debited to my bank account, I have not had any sort of invoice or any mention of VAT, I think you should speak to club/esso and get sorted

Did you not get an email from Essocard for your purchase, the VAT is mentioned on there.

no nothing, what i have given you above is what i copied from my online account, it just gives an order ref date time, how much per ltr, number of ltrs i took and price, all are correct and the £57.71 was debited to my bank account, no problems my end.

Often when paying I am asked if I want a VAT receipt. Always say no and am just given a standard credit card receipt, with no breakdown of VAT.

Perhaps those who are getting the emails detailing VAT ticked something on registration requesting them.

good point, and would make sense if you were vat registered and you had a way of reclaiming vat, otherwise this would be a no brainer, dont remember seeing anything re vat, but I could be wrong

Hmm.. I got an email giving the details of my purchase in addition to the transaction appearing on my essocard account.. I am unable to say if this is normal however, as I have only ever used it the once in early December and neither of our vehicles has required any fuel in the mean time. I'll find out mid January when I am likely to use it again..
