Motor home doors locking by themselves.

We have a 2018 Lunar Roadstar Ti. Lovely van but..

The doors (cab and habitation) lock themselves a couple of minutes after leaving the van. If you don’t have the key with you then you are in real problems.

I see on other forums that this is not the first instance of this.

Does anyone have a solution to this please?

Many thanks

I’m not sure what your base vehicle is but this is usually a safeguard measure built in for delivery driver use.

You could secrete a spare key somewhere on the outside of the vehicle. This is what we've done but I'm not telling you where! It only needs to be the basic key to unlock the driver's door rather than the expensive chipped key.

    Base is a Renault Master.

    Does this help?

Many years ago we had a 2004 Renault Scenic that used to lock all doors after several minutes if left without the ignition key in .

Depending on the manufacturer of the base unit it should be able to turn it off . 👍

I think the Lunar is on a Renault base....?

My FIL's Renault Captur does this  ( locks as you walk away with the key in your pocket)....

Does it lock if the key is still inside the vehicle as you walk away....?

A Nissan van we have in work ( I think Nissan & Renault are part of the same group now?) has keyless entry & go, but won't lock if the key is still in the vehicle.....

Hi all and thanks for your posts.

Yes, it is a Renault base. Unfortunately it does not have the master lock button.

It locks even when a key is left in the van.

Looks like hiding a key is the only option. Maybe just buy a cheap non chip version as suggested as both ours are chipped versions.

Have emailed Lunar but no response yet (strange they don’t offer a phone number🤔)

We too, better still cheap as chips to get a hab door key cut. These are readily available from Timpsons and similar. Again, I'm not telling where it's secreted mind! I have taken a photo with my iPhone mind 'cos I doubt if I could even remember where it is! Belt and braces as they say!🔑

Our unchipped cab door key came from Timpsons. Easily done in Tesco's car park.

We also got a spare fully chipped key at around 20% of the cost of a Peugeot one. 👍🏻

Yes, you can even keep that other cheap chipped key somewhere hidden about the interior of the van. Just make sure it's kept out of range of the system. Keeping it in a small metal box I'm told can help security too but can't swear to this. Still need the hab key secreted on the outside mind.

We find the foldable original key fouls on the driver's knee so use the replacement chipped key all the time for driving while the fob sits in the centre console. Both are then clipped together for dropping in a pocket after parking. Works for us.👍🏻

    An update.

lunar say it is a Renault problem not theirs. Nice.

Renault say they are looking into it and will get back to me.

    keep you posted

Your insurer won't be impressed if someone steals your motorhome because they found the duplicate keys under the van on the chassis rails. People do this and take the risk but when a vehicle is stolen, the insurers will often ask for both sets of keys and any other keys.

We have a Renault Scenic and that does the same, locks when walking away from it, but it doesn't when the key is left inside.  It also sets the alarm of course when locking, and many's the time that OH or myself has got out and walked away to pick something up, or check the front door, the other one sitting in the car then not daring to  move incase the alarm then goes off!  Good fun!

On another note, and I'm no expert, if something is done to override this in the case of the OP, would that have an effect on insurance, ie would it be classed as a modification from the original factory settings as it were?  I'd certainly check if that was me.  I'm a belts and braces person!

That's why we secrete a skeleton hab key in an extremely well hidden, tucked away place. Finding ours per chance would possibly be equal to winning the lotto.

Our unchipped key is similarly so well hidden that it’s discovery is very unlikely.

As for an insurance company asking for “any other keys”, as outlined by Aspenshaw, the  response would surely be “what other keys”.

We had an extra unchipped key cut, much the same as everyone on here always aware we can lock ourselves out and it's easily done. We carry separate keys with us, so far so good, it only takes one lock out to hone the mind..wink

    Another update.

Renault say “take it to a dealer”.

When you look at the cost of these motor homes you might have thought that less of a run around would have been good.

As suggested, have got a spare key cut!

    Cheers

Your time is less valuable than theirs! Perhaps they're hoping you give up? No extra work or cost to them. Denial that such things occur as 'we rarely have returns with this issue's. Oh so cynical for one so young 😉.

I do wish that the tests done by clubs etc on new models concentrated more on the built aftercare etc instead of on pretty curtains, large cupboards, useless without a payload to go with it!

I do hope you can get it sorted.

I don't really understand why there should be a problem. I would have presumed that if you left the motorhome without the key then the key would be inside the motorhome and it would not lock itself?

That’s the problem.  It does lock itself even with the key in the van.

It sure does and it’s not the same behaviour as the keyless entry system.

PS. Often the only way to stop the doors re-locking is to unlock them from the switch on the dashboard before leaving the vehicle. They should then not lock once you have left the vehicle.
