Wheel clamps..

Hi all

Taking delivery of new MH early next month with alarm,tracker etc all on it,but would still like to use a wheel clamp and/or steering wheel clamp for added deterrent/security.

Wondering if anyone has any views on which ones to have,any thoughts would be welcome and thanks in advance

    I cannot be bothered with wheel clamps, too much like hard work when there are much easier deterrents to fit. Sounds as you have some of them and if the alarm is a good one with an immobiliser I would have thought any further devices unnecessary.

    I have a STOPLOK steering wheel lock which has the advantage of being a visual deterrent as well. The others are clandestine and may or may not be present.

    You don’t say where you intend to use the wheel clamp, Rexy, but personally I would find a wheel clamp a nuisance on site. Where would it be carried when not in use? Have you space and the payload to accommodate it?

    More importantly, it would negate, for me, the ease of taking to the road and pitching and leaving sites. It would impinge on the very thing that makes MH-ing attractive. 

    Yes, a steering lock is viable and also acts as a visible deterrent (Stoplok are considered good) but I feel a wheelclamp is unnecessary and a hindrance in normal use.

    We use a disklok on the steering wheel as a visible deterrent. I imagine it is much easier to fit than a wheel clamp, but am also aware that armed with a battery powered angle grinder, either could be removed in just a few minutes.

    For "minutes" read "Seconds".  Takes longer with the key.

    I use one of these when we are off site ,say in a car park etc , I know it can be cut off but it might deter someone 

    it takes seconds to fit and lives in the door foot well

    The Mh is a Majestic so although I know that it has quite a bit of security on it,I don't really know how good/bad it will be,only what the salesperson has told me!!!??...

    Should have mentioned the wheel clamp would be for outside house and steering wheel clamp for when we are away.

    I realise that all are probably easy to remove but just like the idea of some sort of deterrent for peace of mind!!!...

    My attitude is if they want they will take it are the going take a £3o.000 or a £80000 pound vehicle  ?

    With alloy wheels, which aren’t common on motor homes, it’s easy to use a lock of the Nemesis type to provide some deterrence. A friend, with her motorhome tried various lightweight solutions, but had to settle for a heavier cage over the wheel style in the end.

    All is not lost though, because you only want it for home, so a cage type can be left there while on the move. They can be a bit of a trial to fit or remove, we’ve found. In fact, the comment has been made, that a thief could cut one off quicker than our own struggles using a key.

    If the additional security is for home, then a security post/ground anchor is another option.

    Good alarms and immobilisers come with certificates of compliance, usually to Thatcham standards. Insurance companies who give discounts for such alarms will usually demand you have this. Ask the salesman for it!

    I had a 'bulldog' thing amongst the kit I got with my first Bolero. used it a couple of times and then....

    as we keep the van on the drive for a quick getaway, id probably drive off with the damn thing still attached....not good....frown

    i gave it to my daughter when they bought their PVC...smile

    Because we had one left from our caravanning days we used a wheel lock when the MH was parked at home. It only takes seconds to fit and remove but a visual deterrent if you think you need it. 

    Now back to a caravan so it was something we didn't need to buy wink

    Many thanks for all your replies.Have checked out the security on the van and they seem to be very good,so will probably fit a steering lock as a sight deterrent and look into a security post when redesigning driveway.
