Ideas needed for weekends away in the winter

Morning all.

My husband and I are newbies to this only owning out MH for a few weeks.

But like all newbies we want to use it as much as possible, and that obviously includes over the winter.

In the summer we know the world is our oyster cool and are looking forward to staying anywhere where we can walk/cycle for a couple of hours before coming back to a nice little BBQ and a nice larger G&T.

But we are unsure what options are open to us in the colder months.

We have managed to get onto York for a Sunday night so I can go around the xmas market, and we have a weekend booked in Hawes and Castleton as having a pint by a roaring log file is on his bucket list wink

But after that we are stumped.

So basically we are after some guidance/ideas of places to stay within an hour or so of Manchester, that once we are there we don't need to use the MH (it is 7.5m and not the easiest thing to park)

Thanks in advance

J

Hello J, and welcome.  I would say follow your interests - are you young enough to seek out off road cycle trails or do some winter walking in Snowdonia, or do you want to look for concerts, theatres, museums, historic houses or National Trust places to visit?

Only after that think of where can you  can stay close by. That might perhaps be a campsite in  this Club's network, but there are hundreds of others open in winter,  or it might be a pub stopover offering Motorhome parking and meals.

Good wishes.. Enjoy your new Motorhome.

Chester Fair Oaks and Southport Club sites immediately spring to mind. Moris Leisure's Oxen Hall, Shresbury next to a Shrewsbury park and ride might also be within an hour of Manchester, certainly not much more?

Good suggestions from Peedee - but I'm thinking why not just drive from Manchester to Sheffield. There's a Viennese candlelit concert in the cathedral, the musical Gypsy at the Lyceum - and the National Thestre company doing Macbeth there later on if you are highbrow.  Park the motorhome at a pub like the Three Jolly Lads at Redmire - take bus into town and a taxi back. And maybe the pub serves big British breakfast in the morning

And there must be similar options for cities like Leeds and Liverpool if you are willing to break free from Club sites. With a Motorhome you really can do things differently from caravanners.

Betws y Coed is a lovely site for parking and not using the van, 3nights for for 2 at present. Great cafes and pubs, stunning views.

The Camping and Caravanning Club have two excellent sites in Keswick, one of which is open all year. They are both close to the town and there are an infinite number of walking options and the cycling from the sites is good too.

    Try looking at www.ukcampsite.co.uk.

There is an option in there for Sites Open All Year broken down by area. Read the reviews before making any decisions.

In addition check out Certified Locations (CL's) in this club and put in Hardstandings when using the search facility.  Some of the are pubs and others near towns and cities which will have public transport.

    Good luck.

You don't mention if you're able to walk or cycle at all? If so, why not head north into the Trough or Forest of Bowland, stay on a CL and try the local pubs in Waddington, Sawley, Clitheroe and the like? There are some gems 😀

Don’t we wish Manchester-Sheffield was an hour’s drive! Not any more sadly Et, traffic is horrendous nowadays, there’s always a bottleneck at Tintwhistle. So there and back to do something isn’t as easy as it used to be, better to come across and stay.

The Club doesn’t offer that many open all year sites close to big urban centres, but some stay open until after Christmas, you need to check. Without looking at dates, what about Wirral Country Park, ferry cross the Mersey, into Liverpool?

We use ours to do a lot of touring in Winter, one night stays, looking at Cathedrals, Abbeys, other historic sites, then move on. But we are small and handy.

I think you will need to use a wider site base than the Club offers to get close to some places of interest, but that’s no bad thing, there are some cracking none Club Sites.

You don’t say what you might be interested in Mrs K, but check out local tourist board websites for particular events, some might have big car parks to take your MH? We do sports events as well, such as velodrome cycling and the odd football match to see a big game. We like variety.laughing

I'm afraid Wirral CP is already closed ttda. Usually the first or second weekend in November but Liverpool still accessible from Southport site as train station not far from CMC site, about 10 minute walk.

You might manage a couple of nights at Chatsworth (look out for cancellations) and be able to see the Christmas displays there, easy walk from the site so the M/H can stay put. Also Castleton, not too far away, another nice place for a short break but keep an eye on the weather as winter sets in.

Have you thought about Burrs Country Park, at Bury?

Thanks everyone for their ideas, especially the ukcampsite website.

As for Burrs, we forgot about that................ which is funny as it is only 5 minutes away

We stayed at Conkers C&CC site recently, nice site should be within an hour or so from you. Lovely walks and cycle rides straight out from the site. Places to eat close by. National Memorial arboretum about 11 miles away, it has a good over spill car park just past the front gate on the left hand side of the road that will easily take a MH.
