Private motorhome rental

Would anyone be interested in renting out their motorhome for approx 6 months starting from April 2019?

Our daughter and son-in-law from New Zealand want to travel in the UK and Europe. We have a 7.6m A Class van, which is just too big for them.

If they buy a van, they have the difficulties of selling it prior to going home and the costs of commercial hire are very high. They would take out fully comprehensive insurance on anything they rented privately.

They only need a two berth, but it must have a toilet and shower.

I know its a long shot, however if you are not planning to use your van at that time, would like to recover some of the expenses of owning it and are looking for very responsible people, this might be an option?

If you'd like to discuss, we'd love to hear from you.

I doubt they will be able to acquire insurance as, in this country, one has to own the vehicle insured. Even if they did insure it, the owner will already have insurance and this would mean the vehicle having two policies in place. Insuring a vehicle twice is not permitted.

The owner of the MH would need to arrange cover for the borrowers of the van and have them added to his/her existing policy. However, our policies usually exclude letting the vehicle for hire or reward.

Good luck but I see the whole issue of borrowing a van being fraught with difficulties.

That “oh so wrong” was a less than friendly way of pointing out there may be ways around it, DD. However, it’s not a straightforward matter and the OP needs to be aware of that.

This information could be a bit out of date but it might be worth following up. Somebody I know in Australia came over to Europe in 2010 and purchased a small motorhome from a company and part of the agreement was that they would buy it back at the end of the stay. I am sure Lionel wouldn't mind you contacting him here to see if he still has the details https://plus.google.com/+LionelMussell say I sent you! Any loss on the motorhome was far less than hiring one.

"Insurable Interest" is a rather complex subject.

A simpler solution would be for an arrangement for the visitors to privately purchase a vehicle for the the tour, with an agreement (a "Back Letter") that the seller would puchase it back from them at the end.

The major problem that would leave is the visitors not having a full time residence in the UK. They might well have to obtain their insurance their New Zealand for foreign use.

Somehow, negotiated long term hire charges start to seem less onerous.

I was thinking on those same lines of buy back schemes which DK mentioned . Google is throwing up names of Motorhome dealers who offer that buy back service and suggestions of insurers for overseas visitors too, but I hesitate to give their names without knowing their reputation.

There is no way that I am likely to permit others to use a vehicle of mine with cover on their insurance rather than mine. The reason is simple: In the event of the vehicle being damaged there is no way that I can compel them to make a claim on their insurance. It is that simple.

I have, 15 years ago, borrowed a car from my daughter for 10 days or so. I did put it onto my insurance to replace a scrapped car whilst looking for a replacement so that in the event of an accident it would not have a direct effect on her insurance history; something that ordinarily I would suggest that she did not rely on. With regard to her dad however she knew that it was safe wink and that in the unlikely event of my writing off her car I would have paid at least its value to her whilst awaiting an insurance payment.

Hi Colin and Pip, If it's all starting to sound too complicated can I ask whether your youngsters need a Motorhome at all?

It's easy for parents who travel that way to think that young people need to travel that way too. My own children began globe trotting when they were all in their 20's  - Europe, Asia, USA, Oz, NZ,and bits of Africa too-  Sometimes with a hire car, but on buses and trains in many places, and on short haul budget airlines too,  sometimes with a tent, but often staying in back packer hostels, more recently using  Airbnb, and if need be picking up informal short term jobs along the way to raise cash. But none of them ever used a Motorhome.

    Wish them well please.

We sorted out the use of one of cars for Canadian relatives to use when staying with us.

I'm sure the NZ visitors will be able to do the same if someone wishes to do this with a motorhome. House exchangers world wide do this too. Speak to your insurers if considering the idea.
