Where to stay near Hillhead?

Hi all,

Planning on a 12 night stay with wife, 7 and 8 year old at Hillhead, Devon, site in July next year.

We still have another 8 nights to book and was after recommendations of sites which are near beaches/towns things for kids to do etc.

We don’t want to head further west as we eventually head north to Scotland.

Somewhere within 2 hours of Hillhead either north or east will do.

Any favourites you’d like to share would be great.

Thanks

It's hard to suggest a site without knowing what you and your family would like to do - children like yours would enjoy the big beaches around Woolacombe in North Devon, or fossil hunting on the Jurassic coast, or off road biking and pony trekking in the New Forest.

There are lots of campsites in all those areas - do you want somewhere casual with camp fires or one with formal gravel squares?  Either way I hope it all goes well.

Eurotraveller's opening comment is so apt. No one on the forum knows what sort of things you and your children like. Why do you need suggestions from people you don't know?

If you are really wanting to go somewhere within 2 hours of Hillhead (hardly "near Hillhead") why not look at a road atlas and some guidebooks to give you some idea of possible areas you and your family may like to visit? A road atlas may give you some idea of possibilities and guide books are often available in public libraries. Alternatively, once you have some possible destinations you could look at Tourist Information websites for those places or even contact relevant TICs for their booklets. It really is easy. Your children may enjoy looking at the booklets and you could decide together where you would like to go.

I always wonder why people ask such general questions on forums about where they could go for a holiday. (In many cases a question is asked, many suggestions are made and the person never responds, making me wonder how real the opening posts were.)

Please don't be offended if your post is genuine. I still think that personal research in the way I have suggested is best.

Perhaps the OP is from further north or Scotland and not familiar with the southwest?

I would suggest looking around places like Minehead (Butlins Leisure complex does day tickets etc.) also Burnham on Sea, Cheddar or perhaps a bit further inland, Longleat and the Safari park, a day out at Stonehenge etc.

Thanks Dunelm for your insight. Your thoughts are much appreciated.

Just to confirm I am real.

Ok I admit a vague question.

Just to give a little more detail a site where it’s possible to walk to the beach would be top of the list.

Not bothered by club house/entertainment as will have had this at Hill head.

Small play park would be handy but good clean facilities would be nice as would walk short drive to village/shop.

    Cheers

Have you looked at the Hurn Lane club site or one of the nearby commercial sites?

Two hours from Torbay widens up a huge area. Have you any particular sites or areas in mind? It would help a lot.👍🏻

    Thanks😀

We were thinking of booking our extra nights at Hurn Lane but had read a few reviews of noise from adjacent commercial sites.

Other than that it sounded like a good choice. Any one had recent experience of staying here?

I guess what appeals is that it’s heading in the right direction for our eventual return home.

If there are other sites which anyone would recommend in a similar location to Hurn Lane it would be good to know?

    Thanks

I’ve stayed at Hurn Lane many times although not recently. There can be noise from the adjacent static site but, in my opinion, it’s low level - children playing and people laughing rather than late night revelry.

It depends a lot on when you go and and where you pitch as it’s obviously going to be more noticeable at peak times or if you pitch at the boundary nearest the other site.

I wouldn’t let the slim possibility of slight noise stop me going again unless it was during the school summer holidays in which case you wouldn’t find me on any big site!

We love Crossways.  Get the train into Weymouth or Bournemouth.  Go to Durdle Door or Lulworth Cove.  Tank museum if weather not good. The deer would come every night to the van for a treat and eat out your hand.
