    Thank ValDa.

Updating a vintage model has crossed my mind, but I know my own limitations in terms of competence and available time.  I've seen a few refurbished units advertised that looked to be well done, but also a few that raised concerns - surely if the chassis is replaced with a modern version an IVA is required?

I gave the Glendale more as an example of a caravan whose internal dimensions we found comfortable.  I think we're ultimately looking for something more modern.  I also have reservations about  a vintage van standing up to the types of trip we'd like to attempt.

That was how we saw it - we can manage other ways of washing, but the loo is an essential, after too many nights of nipping across wet campsites from our various tents over the years!
I've never tried towing a full height van to compare, but the reduced wind resistance is a superb asset. So far it's sat quite happily behind our car in big cross winds over both Moray and Forth road bridges last April, past huge lorries on the Motorway, and all, and been remarkably stable. We've not had it long, and a patch of ill health clobbered much of last Summer, but we have also done an unplugged weekend, with small folding solar panel, among other larger trips, and it worked fine.
Oops, I said I'd stop evangelising, but you did reply smile.

I may have missed this in your posts but is your licence class B or B+E becuse that may restrict you from towing to your available choice

Not sure if someone has pointed this out already, but just in case...  We have a small car and were recently looking to change our motorhome for a caravan.  I was trying to identify our legal towing weight and was getting conflicting information...even Vauxhall couldn't give me a definitive answer.  Then I realised on the car log book/V5 it identifies your max towing weight (ours is 1050kg). So might be worth starting there to establish what you could tow?  I picked up our new-to-us Elddis Vogue (Explore 304) at the weekend and whilst it obviously isn't fully loaded yet, the car was great towing it.  Fab little layout and max weight 1030kg so within our limit.  Also considered the Lunar Ariva which is def better for storage space and lighter.  Good luck!

Hi Paul, I passed my test in '91 so have BE, C1E, D1E - but the GTW trips with the Picasso well before it would matter.

Thanks Daisy2, both of those are now on our list.

I haven't disappeared completely, been lurking and watching!  Nothing turned up that met our criteria and we ended up taking the tent a couple of times this year.  We've also added "must have room for the dog" to our criteria.

Off to look at an older (1994) Sprite Alpine Super 2 tomorrow.  Within the weight limits for the car, looks like it ticks all our requirements - if it does it would create other problems I'd need to solve sharpish, where to store it (sadly the drive is too short) and getting a tow bar fitted.

I still haven't disappeared, but we had a slight change of plan.  The Sprite was somewhat over-priced for the condition it was in, so we walked away from that, sat back and re-assessed what we really wanted and needed om order to do what we want to do.

Several months on, and we've found something that ticks our boxes.  We've picked up an early-'90s Hymer B564.

Thanks for everyone's help whilst we were considering caravan's, it's all been very useful in establishing what we really wanted.
