Mirrors needed to fit on a Land Rover Discovery 4
Hi, well my partner & I got to 50 years young this year & took the plunge & purchased a caravan, Mmmmmm our family think we have had a mid life crisis !!!!!!!! . We have booked a long weekend @ Harbour Lights campsite in Cumbria with our woof woofs.
The only thing i am having trouble with is finding ext mirrors to fit my landrover discovery 4 2016, the models before this had different shaped mirrors to mine, CAN ANYONE PLEASE PLEASE HELP????. We have tried 6 makes & models but still im stuck.
We have bought a second hand Abi Globestar to see if we will like caravanning, the family & friends are running a bet with the winner getting a pamper day(for the ladies) & the guys (a day at the races- stock car racing).
Ps i hope the weather will be ok when we are away as we have 4 dogs & if its raining the dogs wil well lets just say CARRY ON CAMPING aint got anything on us, Pics to follow.

Wendy - it would be helpful if you could say which ones you have tried which didn't work. I have Milenco Grand Aeros on my VW Touareg - which has big standard mirrors like the Disco and although they are a bit fiddly to get the brackets between the mirror lens and the housing, once on they are very secure, give a good view and don't vibrate.

+1 on the mirrors and have found them excellent, seen lots of them on all makes.
I have found that if fiddly to fit at the top of your mirrors try the bottom, and vice versa, there is probably more of a gap at one end than the other?

Corners - I used to fit them on the bottom of the mirrors on my last Touareg because they wouldn't fit on the top but on this latest model, they are fine on top if a bit fiddly sometimes. Only downside to fitting on the bottom is that when they fold in when locking etc, they tend to foul on the door whereas on the top they are fine. Being able to fold them in fully is useful - particularly in Devon

Milenco claim to do pads specifically for Landrovers. Might be worth investigating?
@ RichardandRos. I couldn’t get my grand Aeros to fit the top of my 2015 Escape. I will have to try again. I fitted them on the bottom but can’t fold them in and take real care in fitting otherwise they work loose. Are you using the standard pads?

I use suck it and see mirrors. They stick to the centre of the wing mirror. Some people say they find it awkward having the wing mirror obstructed, but I don't find it at all bad. The suck it and see mirrors have a tiny convex mirror in the centre which I find useful. Dead easy to adjust - just use the electronic mirror adjusters. We gave up on our Milenco Aero mirrors. Trying to adjust the nearside mirror was a complete pain. No longer do I need to ask my wife.... up a bit, no down, left, right, a bit more, now back etc

Yes indeed very good point.I found it irritating to remember to disable the auto fold option each time I was towing, so I used the mirror adjust button/toggle to move the mirrors downward enough to make the space larger.

following on from my previous post,I found that when they were fitted to the top of the mirror they 'seemed' to not need adjusting at all from one use to the next? I think maybe that was because as it is curved on the top (and flatter on the bottom) once put on and all the screws tightened it could only be fitted in the same place each time?

Boff - mine is a 2015 Escape - so identical to yours. On the odd occasion when they wouldn't go on - and it only seems to apply to the driver's side - I have adjusted the mirror lens to give more clearance at the top and then readjusted it once the mirror brackets are in place and that seems to work. Doesn't seem to happen every time, though - even though the lens is always in the same place. Strange? Obviously the clearance between the top of the lens and the mirror body is very tight, but I have always managed it, eventually.
Secured to the top of the housing, they are really firmly attached and I haven't had any issues at all with them coming loose - and yes, I'm using the standard pads.

Boff - just a PS and apologies for being slightly off-topic - don't break the lens! Someone hit my mirror in Devon two years ago. Cost of replacement - for just the lens - £250!!!!!!!

Thanks for the advice, I have disabled the auto fold option on the mirror. Because if I didn’t I would forget and that would end in tears. I have bought cars for less than £250 I also need to experiment with the longer arms for mirrors, I bought these to use with the Landcrusier and a 2.4m wide van. The Touareg is wider than the LC and I have gone back to the standard arms so will experiment. We only got the towbar fitted a couple of days before we headed off to France, so it was all a bit of a rush.
@ OP: Sorry for comprehensively hi jacking your thread! I find the grand Aeros very good compared to some of the other mirrors we have tried

Convex mirrors though, for me a way better field of view than the flat.
I also bought the v shaped pads, which seem to grip a little better.

I have a 2014 Discovery 4 and use Milenco Grand Aero. I did find that the clamps didn’t hold onto the mirrors very well and contacted Milenco, they eventually supplied another set of clamps which were in my opinion still not as secure as I would have expected.
I rectified this by adopting a suggestion on other forums, this was by the cheap method of putting a piece of old bicycle inner tube around the lower part of the clamp.
As an aside I always use flat mirrors.

sorry what do you mean lower part of the clamp? depending on if you put them on top or below your car mirrors? Do you mean on the part of the clamp that goes into the mirror housing or clamps to the outside?

I meant the thinner part of the clamp, the part that goes inside of the mirror housing.
The Milenco mirror clamps can be fitted to the bottom of the mirror housing on the Discovery 4 but they foul the body of the car when they auto fold and annoyingly the auto fold option cannot be disabled other than by a Retailer/Authorised Repairer when the vehicle is locked, and unfold when it is unlocked.

Hi to everyone who wrote back to me, ive just tried milenco grand aero ones with the special pads to fit landrovers, they stayed on but they didnt fit that well, the new pads should fit in the groves on the wing mirrors but they are hit & miss i will get there eventually.
I have another question, on my discovery 4 ive got the detachable towbar & ive just fitted a alko stabiliser to my caravan, but when i hook up to my jeep the red handle on the stabiliser which when pushed down allows the pads to hug the towball, but i cant get the handle all the way down. So my question is - is the towball to big?? what dimension should the towball be to fit the stabiliser??
We had a great time away @ the weekend our first trip & we have got the BUG, already started booking places for 2019.
My daughter calls this our MID LIFE CRISIS !!! 😂

when the stabiliser and/or pads are new it does take quite a bit, even a lot, of effort to push down the red handle, we didn't realise how much until we got new pads last service. You probably need to really push with you weight over it, or get someone else to help push it down, and also when you need to pull it up.
