Route from Dingwall to Kyle of Lochalsh
Fairly new to towing, I intend to travel from Dingwall to Kyle of Lochalsh later this month. The obvious route is via the A832 to Achnasheen and then the A890 along Loch Carron but I have heard that the Loch Carron section has single-track roads with a vertical side. An alternative route is the A82 to the A87 via Invermoriston but this is 20 miles longer, I have driven this several times in a motorhome and it is very busy. I will be towing a Swift, 7.54 metres long and 2.23 metres wide. Has anyone got any recent experience of the Loch Carron route who can give me some advice?

Hi John. No need to worry about either of those routes. Buses and heavy lorries use those routes every day. Single track roads are nothing to fear, there are numerous passing places at regular intervals. I was along the Loch Carron road in the autumn of last year and as long as you have a reasonably powerful tow car, the hills should be absolutely no problem.

Google Stromeferry Bypass for latest news of major road works taking place in the area of rockfalls from now until the end of this year. This includes laying a temporary road surface along a short stretch of railway line, traffic lights while a train is due, a limit on the size of vehicles which can use that stretch and night time road closures.
