Them and us

You are probably right in what you say David.
I understand from what I read, there has, in recent years, been a steady increase in the sale of motorhomes, while sales of caravans have remained static, or slowed.
The caravan club, which I had been a member of for 20 years, until we gave up caravanning, and went over to boating for 5 years, I have now rejoined as a motorhomer. The club needs members to survive.
With what I imagine to be a significant number of its caravan owning members moving over to motorhomes and camper vans, the club needed to reflect this in its name, or potentially see it's membership numbers decline.
Why including motorhomes in its name should upset some people, beggars belief, and it can only be a form of snobbery, or clique culture.
Are we not basically all campers, whether in a tent, caravan, camper van, or motor home.
I don't look down on people if they camp with a tent, and I don't look up to, or envy people who have a large Winnebago RV. As far as I'm concerned they are all fellow campers.
If some caravan owning club members resent the fact that I have moved over to a motor home, and should be not be a member of the club, then I really don't give a stuff. They are in a very small minority, compared to all the friendly caravanners that I have had the pleasure of meeting, over the years.
Some folk really do need to 'get a life' (lol)

Unfortunately the name change did throw up a few negatives but I wonder if that was the only way some people felt they could express their disappointment/anger by attacking those they see as being the cause of that change?
On the other hand a lot of club members didn't 'attack' MHomers their discontent was at the vast sums of money spent on what they thought was a totally unnecessary exercise
Anyway in the 6 years I have been a member of the forum there have been members who have tried, and in the main failed, to bring division

We have been members of the club for over 30 years and never experienced any rivalry. We are both equal but possibly a little different but that is all.
There are now more motorhomers these days but caravan sales are also increasing year on year. The lower numbers of motorhomes sold possibly makes the increase in their numbers look more impressive than it is though.

I agree with the amount of money the name change as cost a lot which could of spent on some tired sites when I contacted the club there response was that its not cost anything as its been all budgeted for I explained my mortgage is budgeted for but still cost me a arm and leg

There ya go Dave, I’ll not be billing the YC&MC for my work, I’d not want to start another few years of chuntering😂😂😂.
PS-don’t judge me I was pushed for time😨😂

Surprisingly caravan sales still outpace motorhomes, approx. 23000 to 14000 in 2017 according to the NCC! There are also many more tourers than motorhomes on the road. The numbers surprised me as I thought, it was the other way around.

all right as long as the owners 'picked up'....
re the OP title, we saw Roger Waters a few weeks ago in Hyde Park and it was definitely 'Us and Them'....

We're new to the whole mobile holiday home experience, and have been away twice since getting our motorhome.
We've met some really friendly people in Motorhomes, camper vans and caravans.
Nobody told us when we joined, that we're not supposed to speak to caravanners. 😉🤣🤣
I think we'll keep on speaking to people as we go.
Feel the love!💖

Since starting caravanning back in the early naughties, I haven’t had any problems with Motorhomers, in fact, I have been in many for a cup of tea or a chat more recently about the joys of Offgrid. At the moment I’m happy with the caravan but the day may come when I get a Motorhome. So yes, we all do things slightly differently but that’s what makes this hobby so interesting- you never stop learning.

As a cc. member I can't understand why the club would not let me stay at a club site I would give them some mxxk for there rose beds.

What's the difference whether the people on the next pitch are caravanners or motorhomers? All are campers who have simply chosen their own method of pursuing the hobby. We started as caravanners, moved to camper van then small motor caravan over a period of just over 8 years, and back to caravans for the last 17 years.
Changes of opinion as to which was best varied depending on whether we were in the UK, or in France. On balance, I would say that m/homes are better catered for in France, and caravans better in the UK - but that's my opinion.
Personally, if money was no object, I would have one of each and choose which one to go off in, according to how it fit into a particular holiday plan. And any "rivalry" is another of those British quirks. The continentals, caravanners or m/homers, don't give a damn about what type of outfit is pitched next to them.

I used to be 'one of us' but now 'I'm one of them' or is it the other way round?

You and me both
Caravanner for 20 years, then boater for 5 years, and now a motorhomer for 2 weeks 😊
So I don't know if I am a 'them, an 'us', or something else 😆
What I do know, is that the 'them and us' issue is nothing more than childish behaviour, by a bunch of grumpy caravanning old farts, that are stuck in a time warp.
They probably look down their noses at people that belong to the c&cc 🙄
For the record, I am an 'old fart', albeit not a grumpy one. I enjoyed my caravanning years, and hope to enjoy my time with the motor home.
Caravan, camper van, motor home, or tent, I'm happy to pitch alongside any of them.

I think the snobbishness, if you can call it that, began with the Caravan Club many years ago. At that time, we were members of C&CC, and a young colleague, changing from tenting to a caravan, bought an old Elddis with gas lighting (actually similar to our first van). Another colleague was in the CC, and advised him to join that and go to the rallies. He did just that, and the next Monday morning he arrived in work with a distinct chip on his shoulder. Apparently, the rally marshals at the gate were sending all the late model vans to the top of the field, and the older ones to the bottom. This was around 1985-86 time, so quite some time ago.
We later joined the CC, were in both clubs for a time, then dropped out of the C&CC. But at CC sites, over the years, we have met one or two members where it would not surprise us if they came from the 'them and us' background - not caravans v. m/homes, but new(-ish) outfits v. mature ones.
