Why a motorhome and not a caravan
Everyone's choice of touring outfit has to suit them. However I noticed on my very first foray into the discussion board (following the Aires Petition) that there appears to be one or more people who intensely dislike motorhomes and appear to think we should all have cars and caravans.
My reasons for a motorhome are due to disability. With a motorhome I can "bum walk" from my front seat across to my wheelchair and then get in and out of the vehicle unaided via the habitation door. I can use the chair to get me from one end of the vehicle to the other, into the fixed bed (set at exactly the correct height and always available when needed) and into the loo/shower and I can use the kitchen. The modifications to the motorhome have been minimal and well within my wallet constraints. I have freedom.
If I had a car and caravan I would have to rely on other people to help me set up, get in and out of the car, get the caravan unhitched and the corner steadies down. The cost of custom building was way outside my budget.
Please can the people who state "should have bought a caravan" think a little more before they make some of the comments that they do? We all buy what we buy for a reason. I would never tell anyone what they should or should not spend their money on or that they are wrong on their choice. Please give me the same consideration.
Moderator Edit:
Thanks to those who've contributed but, as this thread looks like it's going to end up being another 'caravans versus motorhomes' thread, which we don't encourage, I'm closing it and asking the Community Manager to make a decision on whether it can be reopened.

I have read the threads and can't see anyone who intensely dislikes motorhomes .

,Which seem to be in answer to those who have had a negative experience (as us) when we had motor caravans, and have found, as others on here are now doing, finding that the car/caravan combination is more versatile as one gets a "bit older"

There are a few who think caravans are terrible things and shouldn’t be allowed, MP.
Many of us have moved from one to the other and for us the move to a MH was due to lessening ability brought on by age.
As has been said, I’ve not seen any anti MH posts in the aires threads other than the odd comment made in jest.

Having swapped from a caravan to a MH just under a year ago, I find the latter more versatile. Although fast approaching three quarters of a century, perhaps I'm not old enough yet.

Agreed. It goes both ways. I've seen some quite insulting things said about caravans in my time here.
There are a few people in all walks of life that think that their way is the right way. I don't value their opinions much.
We have a caravan because it suits us. We won't be swapping to a motorhome. That decision has been made. Just because it doesn't work for us doesn't make it a bad choice for others.

Well if it was only 1 post I wouldn't let it bother you. There are some, as in any forum or any walk of life come to that, who are convinced that "their way" is the only right and sensible way to do things. They're usually very lacking in subtlety and I tend not to take any notice of such blinkered views.
The important thing is to get on and enjoy our shared form of leisure in whatever way suits us - we be fools to do otherwise, wouldn't we?

As someone who has had Caravans and Motorhomes over the years I see absolutely no reason why there should be any animosity between Caravanners and Motorhomers.
I never bother about the handful of posters who just want to stir up trouble and cause divisions.--- We all holiday in the manner which suits our lifestyle at the time. There is absolutely nothing wrong in that.---Enjoy your chosen holiday method MHPearson and try to ignore those who are intolerant of other people's choices.

Having caravanned for 33 years years we moved to a MH 6 years ago, we are now in the process of moving back to a caravan.
We've enjoyed both types of vehicle but have decided that the MH isn't as flexible as we would like or that some would have you believe.
It all comes down to your individual style of touring. Ours isn't parking in glorified car parks and jumping around daily from place to place.
If that is for you then that's fine, as long as you enjoy what you do then go ahead and don't let anyone put you off.
We will miss the 'ability' to be able to travel in winter across Europe using Aires, however as we have never done that it won't be a great loss. We will still go away in the colder months but it will just need a bit more planning to find sites that are open.
As the OP has a disability then this is a very valid reason for MH ownership and no one should make him/her feel uncomfortable about it.
