Hi we're going to Hawes in a couple of weeks and are wondering if anyone can advise on cycling in the area.

Usually we take a couple of folding bikes to get around, but would much prefer to stay off roads, especially country roads where possible.

All the best

We have not cycled round there but visit fairly regularly. I would think, for the bike types you mention, the options are fairly limited if you want to stay off road. There are lots of tracks, but they are rough and only really suitable for mountain bikes.

You specify staying off of country roads, but I would prefer cycling on those to the main A road up the dale, they are reasonably quiet. The problem would be getting to them.

Tombo like you we try to keep off any roads wherever we go.

Try putting "cycle routes around hawes" and read through them printing off where needed.

Plenty of good road cycling just get out a OS map and go. A good ride is up Buttetubs, gets the legs going!, then drop down to Muker, round to Leyburn and back through Castle Bolton and Askrigg.

Sorry did not see you had folding bikes, however the back road from Hawes to Askrigg and Castle Bolton and back is a very quite road.

Many thanks for the replies on the cycling and the other information.

I'm told now we'll be travelling light and doing recce's on foot for future visits.

    All the best
