Parking in Portsmouth
Sorry if this is a question that has been asked many times!
We are sailing to Santander from Portsmouth and are hoping to travel to Portsmouth the evening before we sail to avoid daytime M1 traffic, we have already looked for an evening stopover in a HGV truck stop but would like to have a few hours sight seeing in Portsmouth before we sail the following afternoon. Is there anywhere that has parking for Motorhomes that is fairly secure so that we can go explore? We have looked at the park and ride however on calling them they say the barrier would be down.
Thanks in advance

Joanne, When you arrive in the morning park your Motorhome at Port Solent and take a bus or a taxi into the city for your day's sightseeing.

However, returning in the afternoon with the motorhome the 13 road miles from Gosport to Portsmouth ferry port would at best be a nightmare, the traffic is almost always in the daytime horrendous.
Port Solent is a good option. Another could be the Hilsea Lido at coordinates 50.836078, -1.075351, this offers wider and easier bus options.
Both, the more so the Lido, offer cycle routes into the city if you have bikes onboard. Portsmouth offers good cycling routes which can open up other options; a map is downloadable from the city's website, or was.
Check the Lido coordinates out on Bing maps in Ordance Survey view or Google street view, if interested. If doing the Lido the road layout makes it easier at that time of the day to exit left west to get to the ferry via the M275, no right turns or going right round the mega race track roundabout.

Digressing slightly ..... Not having been to Pompey for a while I've just looked on street view at where the lovely Tricorn used to be. There's a motor home on the current car park.
And look what's happened to The Dorchester Arms! Had many a pint in there.

Yes and once there was a navy there, and that has all but completely gone to!
We still have HMS Victory should anyone start throwing their weight about.
The Tricorn, now that won best and worst architectural building awards, I believe both accolades in the same year. Anything had to be an improvement.

Thank you i will check these options out on street view, the thought of traveling 13 miles in heavy traffic really doesn't appeal, the hubby would do his nut given we are traveling from Leeds the evening before to avoid as much traffic as possible although i do appreciate we are going to encounter traffic at some point but i need to minimise it where possible

Scrub Hilsea Lido car park, I see they have put up a 2 M height barrier. The image though is 2015?
Sorry, that is quite new to me as I use it for parking when cycling in Portsmouth, but not been there for a year. As the image is 2015 maybe it is no longer there, as with my Disco 4 it is very much the thing I would notice as I could only just pass under that.
