We are planning a winter trip to visit Chester and Liverpool. We have never been to the area before. Would Chester Fairoaks be suitable for both bearing in mind that we would prefer to use public transport for both visits? Or would we be better using two sites, Southport maybe? Happy to use CL's if these have more convenient transport links. Grateful for your help.

No idea how long you would be staying but the Canal heritage centre at Ellesmere Port is worth a look in and particularly if they have an interesting event on.

Otherwise it depends on whether you wish to drive at all. Southport is nearer to a rail station but a needlessly long ride to visit Chester.

For me I would suggest Fairoaks with a 3.5 mile drive to zoo P&R for Chester. For Liverpool a 7 mile drive to Hooton P&R railway station (under 15 mins). Parking very reasonable. Last time I used it about two years ago it was free on a Sunday.

We have used Chester Fairoaks on a number of occasions. The site is a short drive away from Chester city centre and is within easy reach of Liverpool. Ellmsmere port and Port Sunlight are also close by. Just outside the site is a good pub who do nice neals. All in all a good site in a good area.

There's a bus to Liverpool from Cheshire oaks but it's a slow journey.

When we visited Liverpool we used the Southport site and used the train, easy enough. When we went to Chester Fairoaks we caught the bus from fairly near the site to visit Chester. Would second EasyT's suggestion of Ellesmere Port and the Canal Museum. We used a taxi to get to that and back not particularly expensive.

There are a number of places well worth a visit David. Depends how long somebody is staying. Off the top of my head I can think of 6 places including Chester and Liverpool. That excludes walks

There's a good CL, Belle Vue Fm, Guilden Sutton, No78 in current Site Directory, with 5 H/S pitches and is midway between the 2 P&R for Chester ( a couple of miles or so to each), or if you've bikes there's an easy 3 ml or so ride into the City most of it off road along an old railway track.
