Quite a lot of people actually, when you stand on the other side of the counter booking people in it is surprising how many pay by cash.

as JK says school holidays quite a few people come into reception with cash, some with all their holiday money in an envelope and count it out. Not everyone has a lot of disposable income and the only way some people can afford to go on holiday is putting a bit by every week from house keeping and the like, a lot of the people who pay with cash are so called youngsters.

With the recent problems with banks ,  I would suggest carrying as much cash as you may need to spend.

Proved right (smug emoji). When the local petrol station card system went down. Just me and the local gypsy had cash for a full tank.

No need to carry an additional £100 if you have that already.  wink

but if I needed to brim my tank, it'd be £100 to fill it leaving me with an empty wallet & then I wouldn't be able to buy anything from the site shop. In 35+ years of carrying a credit card I've always been able to use it to pay for my fuel .... the chances of the system being down is slim - at best.

But surely you only need to carry sufficient extra cash to purchase enough fuel to get you to the nearest petrol station who's card system is working. A  look on your sat nav and a quick  phone call to confirm card system is in use is all that's needed. Simples.laughing

But would you know before you brimmed your car that the card system was down? 😉

About ten days ago we filled up the car (Discovery) with diesel plus a can of petrol (for the Quad), and by OH got to the till the card system had gone  down. He came back out to the car and between us we had enough cash to pay (£116). Meanwhile the rest of the queue were fiddling about with bits of paper and details and the pumps were switched off.

We don't always have that much, but we're never without (divided between the two of us).

What's wrong with using cash. It's legal tender. The Site staff buy those items from their own pockets, why should they not be reimbursed in cash. Lets face it, there are thousands of cash points throughout the UK why not use them.

I think the bits and bobs sold by site wardens is a little sideline making a small profit, for which they have to buy the stuff out of their own funds.

On such a small scale they probably dont make much out of it for their effort. Introducing Card transactions is a step towards accounts and the good old Dept of Rev. Add that rigmarole to the  business and the little earner is not worth the bother.

On two occasions recently we have needed cash to purchase fish and chips both at popular destinations, in Hampshire in Hythe and Dorset in Lyme Regis

Thats all outgoings! 1.75% of every transaction soon adds up. If it's on very small ticket items I suspect the wardens would need to cover that cost in the price they sell at as well as the bigger ticket prices. Next moan would be "Much cheaper elsewhere". If the wardens are happy to stock items I'm happy to pay in cash and a small premium. The alternative? Get in the car, walk, cycle to nearest stockists then return. Much easier to stroll or send the kids/grandkids over to purchase and enjoy your break 😁.

Maybe the club could buy the gas supplies they ask the wardens to stock - that way a card transaction could ocurr. It might even lead to a reduced cost if gas as they would be bulk purchasers 😉.

I'm never without a note tucked in my phone case these days. I rarely carry a handbag when out and about!
