Waste Water?

Having just returned to caravanning, after a break of around 10 years, but this time with a Motorhome, I have question regarding the disposal of waste water on CLs.

Looking through the Sites Directory, I note that many CLs do not list a waste water disposal facility for Motorhomes.

I certainly don't want to go back to using a Waste Master, as we did with the caravan, so what do you guys do?

I have seen some people letting it drain onto the road while driving, but that would seem to be a good way of getting Motothome users, a bad name, and I wouldn't do it.

I have been puzzling over this one as we are getting a motorhome soon.  Some of the suggestions include: emptying with a bucket or attaching a length of hose to enable discharge into a hedge.  Disposal around hedges is normally permissible on CL sites so I guess those methods are o.k.

When we had the caravan, disposing of waste water into a hedge was the normally accepted process, at weekend club meets.

I guess it would be a matter of asking the CL owner, when booking.

Can't see the sense in carting a tank full of waste water around.

A length hose pipe would seem like a good idea.

Most motorhomes have a tank, it depends what you use your water for.  We don't shower or wash the pots in our motorhome (using the on-site facilities) so our waste water is minimum and not greasy.  If there is no motor home point we will park over a drain and either make sure the pipe is positioned over it or attach a piece of flexible hose to make sure if goes down the drain.  Many CL's and private sites actively encourage you to drain in the hedge bottom especially during dry periods like those we are lucky enough to be getting.  Our other alternative is to drive home and drain it in our drain outside the house.

The water you often see coming out of travelling motorhomes is either the surplus from the pipe or clean water from the clean tank I imagine

Dave - most MHs I've seen on CLs seem to be using a bucket, but as Q says, very often the owner will suggest emptying into hedges - just check with the owners first. Personally, although I'm not a MHer, it does irritate me to see waste water draining out of MHs (or caravans, to be even handed!) as they leave a site and travel on and it's maybe good practice not to do that for the reasons you say.

Good luck with your new MH - there are lots of lovely CLs out there just waiting for you! smile

We use a Fiamma tank like HERE  I've seen many others do too.

Half the size of a wastemaster, but sometimes it's use is unavoidable. It fits in our shower, in a storage bag when we are on the road.

CLs will always have a method of disposing of grey water but it probably won’t be the drive over type. There will either be a drain that you can empty your tank into by using a hose or many CL owners are happy to have the grey water emptied into hedges or borders.

We carry a hose and a collapsible bucket and haven’t yet had a problem emptying the waste tank which holds around 3 days worth of waste water.

Why not just ask the CL owner?  I'm  sure he/she would be chuffed to pay for the disposal of a bit of your soapy water if they use a sceptic tank.

In the UK it is illegal to discharge water, clean or otherwise, onto the highway.

Thanks for your input guys, and girls.  smile

I guess its a case of seeing what the options are on a particular site, when there.

Having caravanned for 20 years, I had visions of  Motorhome = no more Aquarolls, and wastemasters. laughing

We have always washed up, and showered in our vans, Our last four caravans (we had seven in all), had separate showers, as does the motorhome, that we have now bought.

Personally, I can't see the point in spending good money on a well equipped caravan, or motorhome, not to make full use of what you paid for. Even more so with this motorhome, which has swallowed a huge chunk of the kids inheritance. surprised

We take delivery of the motorhome on saturday, so a whole new camping experience for us.

I can understand using on site shower facilities if your caravan or motorhome has one of these toilet, was basin, and shower, all in one room arrangements, where everything gets wet.

Whatever your choices, Dave, just store the water in your tank and empty it when it’s near full or when convenient. There’s then no need for a Wastemaster as a hose will do the job just about anywhere. A bucket is a back up.

It's each to their own in terms of preferences! We use both our onboard facilities, and if the price is good, site facilities. Doing this means we can use any type of site, with or without facilities, including EHU. We don't bother with aquaroll or wastemaster. Collapsible bucket, multipurpose and a short pipe all we need to get rid of waste water. Top tip for keeping things smelling nice.....wash up in a bowl, and pour this water into Site waste point. Showering water doesn't smell or feel greasy, so you don't get a build up of nasties in the pipes.

With the current water shortages we are collecting waste water at home and using it to water the shrubs in the garden so unless a particular site bans it I can see no reason to change this practice. Travelling throughout Europe we always put a flexible bucket under the waste and dispose of the contents in the nearest hedge. If we are travelling and stopping in lay-bys etc. then, of course, we use the waste tank and empty when we get to site.

Ask the owner as MollysMummmy suggests.

We tend to adopt one of three options - take it home and decide there how to dispose of it, empty it into a collapsible bucket and dump under the hedge or similar, use it to rinse out the toilet cassette and then dump the water at the toilet waste point.

Whatever the CL owner prefers and is sensible.

Takes me back to my scouting days with the wet pit topped with twigs and grass/bracken, pour the waste water down the pit then burn the grass/bracken filter thus no food bits to attract rats, no doubt frowned on these days

Even better when we were boating for five years ☺, the waste water went out through an outet in the side of the boat, and the toilet waste into a large holding tank (much bigger than a Thetford cassette). Up to £16 a time to have it pumped out though 😮

    Btw, I am a G3***, 1968 vintage 🙄

I wonder what the attitude on a Club site would be to dumping waste water in the hedge? I have the feeling that it would be frowned upon based on responses from some caravanners when this topic has been raised before.

On both clubs dumping waste into hedges is frowned upon as the pitches on most of both clubs sites are used more than most cl/vs which would cause an unsavoury build up and be very attractive to flies much to the detriment of other later usersfrown

I don’t believe they are any busier than many continental sites that we have been on. If you are tent camping you don’t really have a choice so caravan or motorhome should be no different. Maybe it’s the possibility of all those redundant Waste Masters.

Not sure what you are suggesting. Perhaps that foreigners have bad habits? Based on 30 years of touring Europe I would suggest that the Dutch are the best, tidiest and neatest campers. Interesting then that they don’t have wastemasters and put a bucket under the waste outlet which mysteriously never gets full. Just an observation.

Over here I now use a bucket.  At the moment on this CL I am using the waste water to allow the young trees to survive and any food residue feeds the wildlife.  I also use the same system over there.
