Suppy - I won't quote your post in full. but just to say that it is probably one of the best posts I've read on CT for some considerable time. If only everyone showed the same tolerant attitude to their fellow holiday makers, what a much more pleasant place sites (and the forum!) would be. It makes such a refreshing change to read of someone who enjoys happy family holidays away and accepts that whilst others may not be "perfect" we can all get along happily with just a bit of acceptance of things we might not personally like ourselves. You carry on the way you're going and enjoy many more family breaks away with the children. smile

I am sure the OP, as would most of us, would agree with the general tenor of Suppy's post. However the OP was only complaining about one family in particular who made life particularly difficult by their general behaviour not only of the children but also the parents if I have read it correctly. I certainly didn't read the post as a general condemnation of children, far from it as the OP specifically mentions that the week before they had a lovely family next to them. Clearly the campsite agreed with his view otherwise a refund would not have been so easily forthcoming?

Good point DK👍🏻. It only takes 1 post to skew the whole message to one of confrontation.

It's the way I read it as well, not a condemnation of children as a whole but one family that spoiled the OP's holiday. It only takes the first page of a thread to turn it into something completely different.

Can quote understand where you're coming from. We mix and match sites.

Supply wholly agree with moulesy a very good post. My kids can still annoy me and they're well out of teenage years and don't live with us. 😉😉 our daughter lives in NZ enjoy your precious family time. It passes in the blink of an eye - but the memories stay 😃

I love to see families on site - generally the kids are great, likewise the adults 😉, but sadly we've seen this sort of behaviour but it has not affected us directly. Once it was 'over there'. British family 😲 black waste disposal in drinking water area and kids throwing balls and riding bikes into vans and cars. One man spoke to family, attitude was we're  on holiday so are the kids they do as they like. 😲😲. Site owner ejected them without a refund. Sadly it's not the kids 😉.

All 3 of you are spot on in that the OP was not anti children at all. Then the thread seemed to be taking an anti-child and anti-dog stance. I decided at that point to leave it alone so I’m glad you’ve all pointed out the deviance from the original issue.

Indeed it is parents and not kids. I avoid certain sites on Summer weekends.

As an example of bad parenting on a caravan site which of us would allow two kids of about 5 or 6 to disappear from the caravan with a cricket bat and hard rubber ball? They were running around my parked car and between car and caravan with the one at the lead swinging the bat around and the other trying to catch him as he wanted first go in bat! My car was struck but thankfully the caravan wasn't. laughing

Oh and I did have a word with the parents who seemed marginally interested ..... at least enough to confiscate the bat for the day whilst the kids then ran off to play with the ball.

We shared some lovely Cornish holidays for a good 15 years with all sorts of folks, from all sorts of places, back in the late 80's, all through the 90's. Lots of children, lots of Continental visitors, lots of dogs. Very few problems. It's not usually the children in most instances anyway, just the parents/guardians attitudes to child caring.

The very bad instances make the news for tragic reasons, and it's not that long ago that I recall notices on the path down to our favourite Cornish beach asking parents to watch children at all times. It's a sad incitement of our times when those with responsibility for children have to be reminded. frown

I am in total agreement with toleration and welcoming of Dogs and Children on Campsites.  They are all part of the rich tapestry of life, and long may it continue.

What should not be tolerated by the site staff, is Parents and Dog owners who completely disregard the ON-Site rules and permit their respective charges to behave in an antisocial way. Those people should be evicted from the site - no if's or buts. There are no bad children or bad dogs.  - Just some bad parents and owners,  who have no place on any campsite.

Dreaded spellcheck has struck.....should be enditement not incitement!

For goodness sakes please don't drag dogs into the argument. That topic has been pummelled to death numerous times, and is oh so boring for the vast majority of readers.

    Hi K,

Is that what life is like on all those commercial sites you use? I'd seriously consider rejoining my friend, we don't experience any of the sort of behaviour you describe.

Oh and when did anyone, including the OP mention anything about dogs??

On our recent trip, we saw something we have never seen before.

This was on a CL, I have no idea whether they had any actual rules.

A van arrived about tea time on the Friday, parked up beside us, 2 adults, 3 children ages 6-12, not sure if the adults were the parents or the grandparents.

As soon as the van was in place, out came a large ball, which was deliberately repeatedly kicked against the side of their van.  The pitches were on sandy gravel, so the ball must have been gritty, Hate to think what marks it must have made on the van.  The adults were apparently completely unconcerned.  This was soon joined by a second, smaller  ball.

Fortunately our car was not parked on that side, but after the balls had rebounded our way and rolled under our van a few times,  I went out and asked them not to play with the balls between the vans.

They did take notice, and later they were playing on the far side of their van, I was just amazed that anyone would let kids do that!  Fortunately we were leaving the next morning as we would not have been comfortable going out for the day leaving our van unattended, and that would have spoiled our break.

Are you on Wikipedia (with your own additions of course) for your 'facts' again K? You actually talked about dogs and what should happen to those owners that break site rules a full 9 minutes before TDAundecided

    I expected better from you

In fairness, the OP mentions dogs in passing, but I think the main thrust of the OPs observations and experiences revolve more around poor supervision of both children and pets by the sound of it.

I am thoroughly expecting a whole tranch of complaints around the usual subjects that pop up during holiday times, two of which already mentioned, next will be speeding, noise, folks walking across pitches, etc.... Most Club Sites are not the place to be for peace and quiet during school holidays. I for one can live with this, being lucky enough to be able to holiday at other times, and at other times of year, most sites are without major problems. Same goes for none Club Sites as well of course. They are just busy with all ages in attendance, mostly enjoying themselves.

We long ago learned to avoid school holidays if going to popular places, or to use CLs, especially without more than a hook up and a tap. I had a stressful job at times with children from less than good backgrounds, and the last thing I wanted was more of the same on my holidays. Our choice.

This is a general reply, not directed at JK or anyone else but unfortunately the OP mentioned "two dogs left to run wild" an unlikely scenario on any sites. The mention of the word "feral" kids is also one likely to cause exclamations of horror on here and five of them seems likely to raise the subject to higher levels. Of course a ball was involved, another level is reached. What really happened we'll never know and frankly on an unknown site what can we make of it? A site that didn't "do" anything about it and offered a refund? Strange really, where does this happen? Are sites offering refunds if we don't like our neighbours? In my humble opinion it's not worth further discussion.

Of course we don’t know the whole story and none of us can as we weren't there and also we weren't party to the owners/managers view of the situation.

Having said that, your words are rather dismissive, Brue, of something that obviously concerned the OP. An OP, incidentally, whose name I don’t associate with 'weekend threads'.

A further point I would make is that if members expect an AS to be the exactly the same as a Club site they could be in for a disappointment. Not in quality but in terms of clientele as seems to be the case with the OP!!!!
