We have camper vaned for over 40 years, having sold the last of our 7vans this weekend. There are a number of reasons. 1)Old age. 2) Cost of keeping a van at home- Depreciation. 3) Cost of running a van.4) Motoring in general getting too expensive 5) Club sites getting poorer in quality but more expensive.6) Road conditions deteriorating ( The N500 is now a hazardous journey, unlike the good conditions of 20 years ago).7) Parking at locations/towns very difficult.

What next. We live in a National Park. There are plenty of places to visit/walk here on our doorstep After all thousands come here on their holidays. More hotel stays and self catering perhaps. More time fishing my local mountain lakes. More time with the shotgun., but firstly renovating the sun baked lawns.

So its good by from him and her. Membership D/D cancelled and as now a non member I dont believe I have any right to pass comment on this thread

Goodbye and good luck, F. I've often disagreed with your points of view over the years - that's what makes the forum fun isn't it - but I wish you and your OH all the best for the future. smile

Only you have the right to decide if you want to keep on posting, choose wisely.

You have 40 years of experience, success, failures, tips and advice, that is a valuable asset.

I envy your location, it is possibly one of the nicest places to visit and must be wonderful to live there. If you come across a middle aged scouser thrashing the living daylights out one of the lakes with a badly matched outfit then say hello, it could be me.

    Enjoy the fishing.

Good luck, the life we live is full of crossroads and new horizons. I'm sure we all entered this pastime of ours at different points but did we all really have that understanding of the impact of our actions on the environments we enjoyed? Given guidance from us, I hope the next generations will step on to the adventures like we had and move forward much as we did. We just need to take responsibility for that future and not shirk it! Despite what we are told to the contrary sadly, it is us oldies that really are the future in many ways. It is us who are now determining the way forward as we are the increasing majority! I'm not sure mind that we 'oldies' have got it right!

Hi Fisherman.  Very good wishes to you both and all the best with what you decide to do next.  Thank you for your contribution to Club Together, and do pop in from time to time to let us know what you are up to.  Even in 'retirement you could very well have advice to pass on to folk and it would be great to hear what you are doing - you are still allowed to post!  Look forward to hearing what you are up to.

Good luck, sounds as though you have enough to do to take the place of something you have enjoyed for 40 years.

    Keep posting.

The thoughts feel as if though I have come to the end of the road. Far from it, just a different way. 99% of the time has been great vanning. I fish in places up in Scotland that now have the grandchildren farming and have been friends over the generations. Vanning taking me to places far off the main roads, to areas largely unseen by mere motorists. May this winter get to writing an article in "stories" reflecting n those good times. Quirky bits like a woman baking a loaf for me in Durness. A stalker asking my help over 3 days to cull deer. Arriving at Balachulish Ferry with decimal coins(1971) and the ferryman saying  "don't take foreign coins". Weird and wonderful

A decision we'll all have to make one day I fear. Now it's made don't look back and regret commenced the next chapter of your life 😃

Treasure your memories and write your memories and put them with your local Record Office you'd be surprised at the academic interest in such things, and think of the thrill your future unknown generations will have when reading it brings you to life - not just a collection of names on a family tree.  You can stipulate that they can't be read in your lifetime/x years should you wish.

Best wishes for your future ventures, Fisherman.  Much of what you say as reasons for leaving cannot be denied, but we still cannot yet consider hanging up our spurs.  Now in our 80's, we have just purchased a VW Caravelle - a vehicle we have dreamt of owning for years.  The new tax rates are eye-watering but, as our son would say, there are no pockets in shrouds.  So we have taken the bull by the horns (or should that be "tow car by the door mirrors"?) and done the deed.  Already looking forward to our next visit to France in 2019.

Well, I have to say that has depressed me a little fisherman! All I can say is thanks for the posts made by you over the years, and as far as the future is concerned, may I wish you all the best and many tight lines!! It comes to us all and I’m beginning to feel the pressures of the impending age thing as we all will - don’t pack the car and van quite as quick as I did several years ago for instance but I hope to tow for a few more years yet. All the best mate and take care!

Merv- not hanging up my boots yet. Today fished Clywedog only 30 miles away. Excellent and quite entertaining watching the Osprey trying her luck. Friday a mountain lake even nearer. Given up driving 350 miles in one go to get past Glasgow and a further 250 miles to get to say Scourie or Loch Watten. We would all be surprised to see what is on our doorsteps. If the  new van owner enjoys it as much as we did then great.

You will have your memories, tales to tell and enjoyment looking at old photos. Best wishes. I nearly came to that decision packing up yesterday in a Yorkshire down pour, but then the sun came out again.
