Seems as if Derbyshire County Council are looking at reopening this caravan site. Possibly enlarged if they can resite the public carpark. Currently looking for operators.

Perhaps an e-mail to the sites department might be worthwhile? Whether the Club would be interested is another matter. It would be a bit pointless if the lease was short as that would prevent proper investment in infrastructure. If I recall  from staying there in the past the toilet block was nothing to write home about.

I’ve reported the thread and asked the CM to pass it on to the appropriate person.

Interesting article Harry. The Council seem to be very upfront with possible lease arrangements which is a bit strange. I suppose with a 25 year lease the Club could be interested but I suspect the projected cost of creating a modern campsite is likely to be far higher than estimated by the Council?

Anyone know why the club site closed in the first place?

We stayed back in 2009 and it was undoubtedly the worst CC site we have stayed on. The toilet block wasn't fit for purpose, there were numerous problems with the public gaining access to the site and lots of reports of theft from awnings etc., there did not seem to be the standard CC 6 metre rule in force and, as it was looked after by voluntary wardens, the clientele were not particularly bothered about following most of the general rules applicable to CC sites. We vowed never to stay there again.

So, if the club do want to take it on again I sincerely hope they take on board the serious misgivings of the previous site.

We liked the site - partly because it had a more laid back feel than some others and also because it was midway between a son in Derby and daughter in Leicester. And as we always use out own facilities the toilet block never troubled us.

We only managed to visit Elvaston site once, before it closed, it was always very popular.  Like Goldie liked the site, and it would be good if it re opens.

Just for interest I have just looked at the old CC site on Google Earth and the full layout can still clearly be seen, including buidings. The article mentioned moving the old car park to another side of the complex an extending the site into the car park, That would go along way to getting rid of the security problems that existed.

We rallied on the old club site last year but the council has successfully put the site out to tender.  I don't  know how too though but it needs a major upgrade and I think it is possibly too small for the CMC to make it profitable.

Will be keeping an eye on the site because it's a lovely spot!
