Money and resources wasted by the Club

We have had breakdown cover through Mayday for a number of years and it is automatically renewed each year.

Today we received through the post details of the benefits of joining and telling us that 8 out of 10 members renew!

I wonder how many other members had the same correspondence. It really is a waste of money and materials sending information to those already having Mayday cover. Why is the Club not showing a responsible attitude to the earth's resources rather than adding to recycling or even landfill?

Surely it is possible for the computer database to have information as to who does not need to be sent such information.

Ours went into the recycling without being opened. We don't do begging letters of any kind.

I picked the letter up off the doormat, looked at the envelope, and tossed it straight in the recycling bin too.  I already have RAC Arrival.

I was also puzzled by the letter as a long standing member of Mayday. I imagine the cost was covered by Green Flag rather than the Club but take the point about the waste of materials. The only reason I can think of is that as the Club don't have access to Green Flag's customer data base so the only way it can be done is by a blanket distribution.

As the letter had address details I was concerned that a couple of you said it was thrown in the recycling unopened, don't people shred sensitive information?

is Mayday  a part of the club? or a separate organisation that simply bought the mailing list from the club?

Will the income generated by new Mayday members be more than the cost of the mail costs?

    I'm not really bothered.

Would putting a tick in the appropriate box under 'Communication Preferences' in your membership Profile stop that?

Maybe that’s why I’ve not had a letter and don't get emails either.👍🏻

I am bothered about unnecessary waste - resources are finite. Even recycling costs money.

Shouldn't the Club be a little more responsible (or bothered) in this aspect?

I’ve just had a look at mine and X'd out a few I’d missed. I promptly got an email thanking me for updating my preferences. Should they have done that seeing I’ve opted not to receive emails (or post or phone calls)?🤔

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I had not visited that area before. I have now opted out of certain communications so I'll see if that makes any difference.

IMHO, no. Firstly is it the club? Secondly the club has to make money, it's a business not a green party offshoot (pun intended)smile

I expect it is because if you automatically review without shopping around they make a whole heap of money out of you so it’s worth a few mail shots. When I am with the AA I usually switch to RAC at renewal time because there are so many offers you can get half the price or less. Just like insurance.

You seemed to have missed two points:

    1) I am referring to unnecessary information being sent to members who already are using Mayday so the Club will make no more money from them!

    2) More importantly, this is a waste of money and resources. You seem to imply that businesses have no need to  be bothered about the earth's resources and waste of materials.

This is not only a concern for members of  "The Green Party"  (of which I am not a member.) Many individuals are concerned about overuse and unnecessary use of materials. It is unfortunate that some individuals and businesses are not.

I got one of these letters about a month agao and just binned it.  This week I got another so I though maybe there is a cock up and I am not enroled with the Green Mayday Flag anymore so I phoned them up.

Apparently these are all sent out by The Caravan Club who get a fee for introducing new customers to Green Flag.

Also interesting was a all the "security questions" I was asked by Green Flag to prove who I was They were fishing for information that they do not have.

Instead of putting the letter in the recycling bin why not pop it back in the post with  "Refused. Return to sender."

I sent them an e-mail as follows

Today I received a letter from David Smith, Product Manager Insurance and Financial Services telling me all about Tailor Made Cover for me.

Please advise Mr Smith that I ALREADY HAVE COVER WITH MAYDAY  and not to waste the monies that I pay into the club telling me about something I already have. Get someone in IT to sort out your mail-merge so that money is not wasted in broad pepper pot mail shots but are targeted at those members who do not have cover with Mayday.

This is a waste of resources and as such is a source of annoyance.

I agree the club is wasting resources and causing annoyance.

Why not include the mail shot with the Magazine-no extra postage and after all they include all sort of useless things already.

Whilst I appreciate that, that suggestion might sound sensible I expect the marketing department probably know that a direct approach dealing with one subject gets the best results. Very often the address flyer in the magazine promotes the CMC services including breakdown but that is obviously considered not as successful as a direct mail distribution.

How can it be more successful when those here are complaining they are existing users of the service being promoted. More likely some under employed staff member stretching out their job in marketing without thinking the thing through.

It is probably just a data protection thing, in that those sending out the information, don't have the right to know you belong to Green Flag / Mayday.

This was certainly the excuse the bank used when I complained about why we were receiving info, for things we already had, clearly would have no interest in / did not apply and duplicated his and hers advertising related to our joint accounts.

    Good afternoon all,

I’m the David Smith whose name is on the letter that some of you have received in error. I’m the External Product Manager at the Club and as such responsible for our relationship with Green Flag.

I’m sorry that some of you have received marketing materials for a product you already have. This is due to a technical glitch on the mailing system, and I am conducting a review of the data processing arrangements between the Club and Green Flag, to try and find a solution to the issue.

I would also add that the number of people experiencing this issue is very small, so costs to the Club (and any environmental impacts) are negligible.

Meanwhile, if you do receive a direct mail for Mayday and are already a customer, please feel free to recycle it (with our apologies) or, if you wish, you can contact the club by emailing technical@camc.com and asking to be removed from the Mayday mailing list. Just leave us your name, membership number and postcode, and we have a manual de-duplicating process in place.

Thank you for your comments. It is good that you have taken notice, are trying to rectify the issue and have bothered to write a post here.. Anything which prevents wastage of money and resources, no matter how small, is always welcome.

(I am always suspicious of the term "technical glitch", wondering if it means that whoever set up the system didn't programme in certain factors but it is being addressed now.)

Good that we can get a response on this subject when all too often people 'duck for cover' when an awkward question arises. On a sort of related matter I am about to join the CMC but wish to use RAC to provide recovery service. I find that to join the RAC I have to be introduced via the CCC. I also understand that the situation is similar where Green Flag is concerned in that if I wanted to join them I must be introduced through the CMC. How does this Kartel arrangement benefit the camping fraternity, is it legal and why should I have to join two clubs to get the arrangement I want?

I'd be interested to hear the justification for this.

    Many thanks.

    It’s Mayday, not Green Flag.

There have been a couple of threads lately. CAMC provide Mayday via Green Flag and tweak the cover to suit Caravanners/motorhomers. Similarly, C&CC offer cover via RAC called Arrival. The two are very similar.

    Legal? Surely you're joking there, R&R. 😀
