The M20 between junction 3(M26-M20) and junction 5 both ways ,they are turning it in to a "smart motorway and at times there are long delays , anyone heading to the ports might want to add a bit of time to their journey

Following on from Huskydogs post , a few  more extra minutes wouldn't go amiss , due to the roadworks on M20 at Ashford. New flyover being built , also due to last until well into 2020.

How good is a smart motorway when you break down and are not in a designated safety zone?

Presumably you are in lane 1 and are likely to be clouted from behind by a 40 ton lorry doing 60mph!

Where do these Highways idiots get their ideas from?

If the M20 is going the same way as the M3 "smart"motorway  the lane one is nothing better than a very long sliproad for each junction and most HGVs now seem to stick to lane two to  save the hassle of keep pulling out when aproaching the next  junction especially arround Hook as no sooner have you got Barack into lane one you are needing to get into lane two again,so we tend to stick with the HGVswink

Smart motorways work on a camera system, changing traffic speeds and moving traffic between lanes.

Use this road quite a bit, avoid early mornings and early evenings and just to state the obvious, be careful in both directions, at times the lane widths seem to get a bit pinched and also the speed cameras are all switched on.
