Let the others pass
Just back from a Cl in Monmouthshire through Mid Wales. Twice during the journey we and many others were held up by vaners. In one case I could see 14 vehicles in front of me plus those behind. When using the narrow A roads and B roads of Wales ( and other rural areas) please dont speed up when you see a little straight bit, let the others pass. Likes wise pull in regularly to ;let following vehicles pass. You never know the ones behind ,may be life savers or just people getting to work.

Fine idea in principle and certainly not speeding up / even slowing on the straight bits is a given. However, pulling into the lay-bys is not always that easy on the type of roads in question. You are often right on top of them before they are signed and often so full of pot holes as to be hazardous to enter, unless you have time to signal and slow to a crawl. If there is one with some advance warning I will use it, unless as JVB says, it is already occupied.

My husband will always pull in if possible when the traffic is building up behind, but many a time we have been behind a slower vehicle, so have pulled in so we don't have to keep changing down. We have often commented that it would be great to have a pop up sign on the back of the caravan saying "It's not us it's the slowcoach in front"

No excuses I only deal in reality. Neither of the ones mentioned above made any attempt to pull in when there was room or give due consideration to other road users. I guess the first held up the traffic all the way to Aberystwyth, after leaving us at Llangurig. We pulled off in Llanidloes for the mountain road so cant tell what the frustration was behind the second.

Was there in "reality?"anything holding up the caravans, or were you to far back in the "queue?" to have a real idea
Ps what in "reality" was the speed of said hold up compaired to say an HGV on the same journey
PPs if any vehicles in the "queue?" were on a lifesaving? mission they have the Blues and Twos to get where they are needed so you also would have pulled over?

As I put F, it is not only room but warning. Particularly when the verges are overgrown, you are often right on top of them before you see some where to pull over. It is often difficult to tell if you have a car 3 inches off you back bumper, so rapid changes in speed are not advisable. So if I can pull over safely I will, otherwise I am afraid folk will have to wait until a safe and practical pull off is reached. As JVB says, if it's an emergency vehicle, everyone will be pulling to the near side.

I drive at a very good pace with van on tow,and there really is no need for others to be concerned that I am holding them up.
obviously if I noticed a build up of vehicles behind,I would pull over if possible to let them pass.
This situation has not arisen in many years of caravan use,but you always get the odd nutcase that must get past a caravan by any means.
It is usually a boy racer or should I now include some motor homers whose vehicles can accelerate slightly quicker.

Typical - those MHers want vanners to pull over so they get first choice of the pitches at noon on a CAMC site!
(That was a joke by the way, I agree, on minor roads it is always wise to pull over where possible and safe if there is a build up of traffic behind.)

You forgot two things, JatH.
- When towing, your speed limit is less than solo vehicles such as cars and my MH so you could well hold others up unless you break the law.
- The smileys from your post.

After a bit of a laugh at the OPs post OH has just reminded me of a incident some years ago when driving one of our Motor caravans (in Dorset) and had been stuck behind an elderly couple in a Morris Minor estate for a while on a narrowish road and came to about 440yds of strait before a bridge and mr rep? decided to go past us, without realising we had a vehicle in front of us,until he had committed himself, then lost it when slamming on his brakes, and into a ditch behind us,(he was not hurt but his company car was)

No TW you are mistaken all the speed limits are the same for you and myself.
The exception being m/ways and if you want to pass that's very easy for you or anyone else to achieve.

No they're not, as JVB said. My speed limits are as per a solo car.
Time you familiarised yourself, JatH.

Thanks for that info jvb but if I'm doing 50 on a single lane road,it's not a valid reason for anyone behind to complain.
😜

Complain - no. Held up - maybe.

The usual comments are comical. It was a real event. Nothing in front of H/H and at last 14 behind, The distance between Rhayader and Llangurig (where I first observed the traffic) is over 10 miles. A number of easily seen pull ins and some reasonable straight bits. But no the defenders can see no wrong even if they have no idea of the road I refer to.

Like your post
Maybe I'm wrong but I thought the set speed limits were the maximum allowed. not a target

When I towed a caravan and was restricted to 50mph, I found that, on the vast majority of single carriageway roads, 50mpg was a reasonable speed for a solo vehicle as well. There is, I understand, a possibility of such roads being redesignated to 50 mph anyway.

It usually helps to give full information in the OP. If you want folk to comment on the actual event. Now that you have read posts about pull ins being difficult to spot and pull into safely, you suddenly inform us that they were easily seen. Just trying to be controversial F?

First off, let me say that I’m always mindful of what’s behind me, and yes, I’ll pull in if I think I’m holding up traffic.
Ok, that said, I don’t know what all the fuss is about. So you encountered an inconsiderate driver, so what? I see inconsiderate drivers every day, downright dangerous at times. Quite often BMW or Audi drivers. Maybe I should pop along to those respective forums and have a bash?

If it is not me that is holding up traffic then I don't pull over and let everyone else pass.
Had a good example of getting out of the way today whilst stopping at a pay booth on a toll bridge. Before I could pay the guy an ambulance came up the road behind, twos and blues etc. going full blast.
I was told to clear off and promptly did so without paying.
