Following the acquisition of Elddis caravans by the Erwin Hymer group, I am intrigued to understand if there have been any positive changes. Perhaps some of our members know people that work in the factory. Have there been any organisational changes affecting design/production/quality assurance and control?  Perhaps it is early days or Hymer don't intend to significantly influence the Elddis design/development/production of caravans. Potentially, there is a significant opportunity for both the Hymer group and our own members if some of the learning and techniques can be shared. Does anyone have any information?

    Campervan sales in Germany and the rest of Europe is going ballistic...

    40% increases mentioned and Hymer turnover  soaring....

    all good stuff.....the problem...? Capacity....

    Elddis provides an extra factory to produce the hot sellers that they can't keep up with...

    if anyone thought we were going to get Elddis vans with Hymer quality, I doubt it....Hymer has its own ranges of Hymer quality, cheaper brands (Carado, sunlight) that are also selling like hotcakes, here and abroad.

    of course, there is still a strong market for cheaper UK vans and I guess Elddis sales are still pretty good, despite their (not) quality reputation..

    the thing is, would you want a Hymer that was built in Consett?

    Hi BoleroBoy,

    An interesting revelation about the European market. Do you think its the 'baby boomer effect' or perhaps some other feature driving sales? My understanding is that the Hymer group already has substantial manufacturing facilities. I am not sure what extra capacity Elddis could add in overall percentage terms, but I guess it must be small. Successful sub-contracting (even within a group) relies on great preparation, planning, management and execution. I feel confident Hymer could do this if they have will, time and investment to spare. I take your point about the perception of the consumers though.

    Do we want a Nissan built in Sunderland?, apparently yes we do & so does the rest of Europe. The Sunderland Nissans are actually beating records👍🏻😊

    Has anyone considered that Hymer’s move to take over Elddis might be a crafty anticipatory move to give them a foothold in the UK post Brexit?

    So many leisure vehicle manufacturers have amalgamated with others I've lost count. Whether we'll be left with monopolised groups remains to be seen. Good to think they are keeping much needed manufacturing units and skill bases going over here.

    I believe that there was a plan by Hymer to radically overhaul Elddis quality and bring the manufacturing into the 20th century.   Unfortunately this project is on hold.  Erwin Hymer found out that Elddis had been purchased and all Hymer engineers have been working full time to try and stop him spinning in his grave, so far all efforts have been unsuccessful.

    or a Toyota from Derby?

    Consett has transformed itself and has become a commuter town for Tyneside and Durham. Lots of new expensive houses there now.

    Skoda was a laughing stock back in the day now they are a respected Marque. That’s the VW effect built outside of Germany. . . .The Hymers I expect will go the same way of success due to the high production & QC standards they expect.

    It will be interesting to see how things develop following Hymer buy out.

    I am on my 4th Eriba (Hymer owned) touring pop-top caravan, renowned for legendery build quality and things have taken a dive since about 2012. 

    Many owners are not happy and Hymer seem oblivious to complaints. These vans are (supposed to be) a premium product at a premium price and Hymer are living on a reputation of years years gone by. Beware!
