I have a Dometic RMS8550 fridge in my caravan and it is only working on the top part of the fridge. The top set of aluminium fins are frosted and the bottom set are not. Any body had this problem and knows what is causing it?

Just out of interest has the freezer compartment been removed? If it has does it mean that the freezer element is exposed which might explain the frosting? Perhaps you need to use a fridge thermometer to see what temperature it is running at.

Just a thought, is the door closing properly?

I have removed my freezer compartment to enable more fridge room, and the top cooling fins do ice up as stated whereas the lower ones are clear.

And here's me thinking that it was only occurring on our fridge, even with the freezer compartment in place. Glad to see it's a general problem. They are rubbish fridges IMO.

We are pretty unimpressed with our Dometic fridge too. Despite numerous referrals to our dealer, who went bust eventually, and several efforts to obtain useful help from the manufacturer, it persistently failed to cool adequately on hot days. In the end we paid a Dometic engineer to replace the entire cooling unit. Now it work adequately but not brilliantly. And we’re poorer  by £400+

Hi, this topic has been run through before, but in very hot weather the caravan fridges are tested beyond their best.

I, and others, have fitted computer fans (about £5 each) to assist air flow at the top of the fridge unit. This works pretty well tbh. I have fitted twin 4inch fans and, working off a switch in the van. The dealers don't like you messing about with their electrics so I use a gadget that you can buy which powers off the mains and converts it to a 12volt cigar lighter outlet. This can be easily removed if necessary.

On our months in France (this June) our ices stayed hard etc!!!!

I believe that you can buy purpose made units that do the same, but at a price.
