Where in Wales to go

Hi.

I have no knowledge of Wales at all (Sorry to anyone that is Welsh. I simply have not been very often to know where is good or bad). Can anyone recommend a good area to stay in North Wales?

We need to keep it cheap, and so we were thinking of a coastal area so as to cheaply entertain the kids (a 6-year-old and a 8-year-old) on the beach. However, British climate being as it is, we could do with some nice towns nearby to visit if/when it rains.

To give you an idea of the type of places we like, we love going near Whitby in Yorkshire, where there is lovely Brunswick Bay to the North, Robin Hoods Bay to the South, and Whitby to walk around when it rains.

There must be a good recommendation for North Wales?

Thanks in advance

Chris

For a club site you could try the site at Penrhos on Anglesey, though it won't be exactly cheap and it may be already fully booked for the school holidays. It does have a large children's play area and there are several very good beaches just a short drive away. There's also Caernarfon if the children are into castles and you could take them up Snowdon on the little train.  There are also many CLs  on Anglesey which would make things a bit more economical. Hope that helps. smile

I’ve just returned from a 5 night stay at the CC&C site near New Quay, Ceredigion. A standard club site which cost me £52.50 for 5 nights including EHU. New Quay is a decent small village with a small sandy beach. See photo. You can do a dolphin viewing boat trip from the harbour, I could see the dolphins swimming  in the bay from the shore. There are plenty of other small fishing villages nearby and lots of sandy coves and beaches.

    Good luck with your search.

The North Wales coast is always good with young children. There's plenty to do in Rhyl, Colwyn Bay etc..... and if you like castles, there are some of the best in this area. Easy to check out online websites for things to do, all areas of Wales, and it is a lovely country. South Wales has beaches much like those in Cornwall towards Pembrokeshire. I would find a location that has lots of things that you fancy doing, then look for a site in that area. New Quay, as we found last year, is a lovely undiscovered little gem!

The less busy areas of North Wales is around Dolgellau. Plenty of mountains, Cycling routes and some good beaches, like Barmouth or Fairbourne. Not so much in the line of paying  attractions, but yes castles like Harlech. Quite a number of Cls  but no club sites. Probably nearest are Gwern y Bwlch,Llanbrynmair and Coed y Llwyn by Trawsfynydd Lake. None will be cheap at main season. Likewise plenty of commercial sites.

Last years we had a bit of a tour of Wales, the first for many years. One of the places we stayed was Barmouth on a campsite called Hendre Mynach. The beautifully sandy beach is a short walk out of the back end of the campsite. Lots of options for days out. Not sure how it would fit with your price requirements. Some pictures in the link below.

I would also suggest places between Barmouth and Harlech, nice family beaches and easy access to Snowdonia or forest park adventure trails.

Parys Mountain on Angelsey is worth a visit too. I've been to Angelsey loads of times but until this year I have to admit I'd never heard  of it.

Check your prices before you go, Cls in particular are expensive in Anglesey. The Lleyn can be very busy in summer. And by the way the roads are generally narrow. Its a great place to live however.

We stayed there recently too, and will use it again......

Closer to New Quay than the CC offering (Shawsmead)....we actually walked into NQ from the site......

    Bookable hardstanding....

And IIRC £1 a night cheaper as well....

We are making good use of our C&CC membership nowadays.....smile

The north wales coast (Presatytn to Bangor) is excellent for your needs. I would not recommend Rhyl as it has some social problems.  Prestatyn has a good beach, lots of kids things and very good soft play barn and swimming pool. Nice town too. Also within easy drive of Chester. Colwyn Bay to LLandudno have beaches and attractions. Llandudno has lots to do and some lovely walks. (Try west Shore to Deganwy.)  Conwy is worth a day- my grandchildren went crabbing.)  Lots of sites including CL/S and also usually at least one temporary holiday site (that's the other club). Also most folks speak English (usually with a Liverpool accent).

We've not been there for years, but friends swear by the Gower, with miles of beaches. They've taken their caravan on a farm site every year there for the last 35 or so.

Not that familiar with N Wales, but our favourite area is West Wales/ Pembrokeshire.  Lots of sites.

As a native I would also suggest Cardiganshire and Pembrokshire for seaside holidays. Some good cheapish Cls there and a number of paying childrens attractions if you must. The St Davids club site is great and close to Whitesands beach, but like all CC sites expensive in main season. The alternative would be my home area, Merionethshire around Dolgellau. No Cc site but cls and commercials. Anglesey and the Lleyn Peninsular will be very busy, expensive and full. You could find yourself overcrowded on Cls. Parking will be difficult and wardens fearsome. Also don't expect to see open toilets. Not the best advert I  admit to a tourist area, but blame the bloated Local Authorities for that.
