Rowntree Park, York
We have a short stay booked, mid week. It's an unknown site for us, although we do know the City of York very well. Anyone got any top tips about the site itself, and immediate surroundings? We are couple with two dogs, small MH. We are aware of building work going on close by, and it won't bother us. Won't be going out in MH during our stay. Any tips from regular users of RP that we should know about, with thanks?

Not the prettiest of sites but, like Baltic Wharf, its a good place to allow the city to be walked
!!If its a wet rainy period { not this week I know} take your mobile fone when out having fun then the wardens can contact you if the 'vans being washed away down the river
!!A couple of hundred yards and you are in the middle of one of Britains Finest, Historic Cities -- So Enjoy Yourselves

There is a large park area almost next door where you can take your dogs. It is definitely not a nice looking site as has been previously said., On the two occasions we short stayed there, it was like parking up next to the runway in heath row with caravan outfits continually whizzing past the caravan for most of the day. That said, it is convenient for a walk into the City for retail therapy and a bit of siteseeing. Be prepared to evacuate your pitch quickly, as the site is prone to flooding, at least, take your wellies.

We like Rowntree Park although we have not been there with the motorhome but have been several times with the caravan. It's so convenient for the City and I think you need to view it in that light, if only the Club had more sites so close to towns and cities. Like Chatsworth its no where near as bad as some people paint it. If you follow the link below there are some pictures of the site although there have been changes since they were taken. The picture showing a large motorhome pitch side on, that area has now been changed and the building behind demolished I think.

Good riverside cycle path from the site entrance. Good park next door with small lake etc. Gate from site to a nice mix of local shops, plus a small tesco, cafe and pub. Keep near to reception to avoid the building noise, try pitches near the park down that end although the park is popular at weekends/holidays. We can't fault the easy access to York or local amenities. Hope you have a good time TDA and enjoy the pop up theatre too.

Should add that Jorvik is now excellent, book online for a discount and a free return throughout the year. Try to go before schools arrive or after they have gone, early AM or late afternoon. Sit on the bottom seat of the gondola it's a slightly better experience!

Thanks one and all! The photos very useful David, it's much as we expected to find it really. We've only booked three nights, mainly because we have tickets to the Rose theatre and village currently on near Clifford's Tower, so it's just so easy to walk there from the site. There aren't many places and things we haven't seen in York down the years, as we don't live far away, and my Dad was from York, so as a child we were regular visitors. Apart from the theatre, I think we fancy looking around St Mary's Abbey and gardens, and while there have a look around Yorkshire Museum. Then if boats allow dogs, we shall do a river cruise up to Bishopthorpe Palace, something I last did as a child!
The weather here is simply stunning at the moment, but we shall have to be careful with dogs in this heat. It's a real departure for us a city site, as we normally book something off the beaten track, out in the wilds. But we enjoyed Warwick Racecourse last year, another place close to town centre. I am off to check the Great Days out guide next, so if there are any offers!

The park next door is great for the Dogs. If you use the back pedestrian gate it takes you to a nice high street where theres shops bars and a nice chippy. As others have said the site is basically a car park. We like the convenience of RP for York and will use it again.

If you are taking your bikes there are lots of cycle routes through and around the city. For a dog walk turn right out of the site, go past the park and you will come to the Millenium Bridge over the river. There are paths on both sides with lots of open spaces for the dogs to get a run/gentle walk. If cycling turn right and head for the race course, from there you can link up to the old railway line to Selby.

Thanks Nellie, sadly no bikes this time, we need to take dog stroller so putting fiamma box on back. I think it might be too hot to leave them in van in day anyway if this weather continues. We love walking in York, find all sorts of hidden gems down little streets. We are booked in next March as well, will probably take bikes then.

Easy level walk into town either way, a fair bit further by turning right and crossing the Millenium Bridge and walking back towards the town on the north side of the river.
