Import from Europe
Hi, we have just driven our motorhome (Dethleffs Fiat Ducato) to the UK where we now live. Can anyone recommend a reliable garage in Bristol to do the necessary EU to UK conversions, like headlights, rear fog light and speedometer Kph to Mph.

Brian Kirby or LennyHB has (I think) imported their last few vans (Belgium seems to yeild the best Euro prices) and will likely answer a question on the MMM forum.
with European vans priced in Euros, importing works best when the pound is weak.....as close to a 1:1 rate as you can get....

anyway, here's a better (different) version.....but its still early here.....
a European van costs €50k....the (hypothetical exchange rate ) is 1€=£1.....that van costs £50k (to purchase the Euros to buy the van...
same euro van with exchange rate at €2=£1.....you'd only need £25 to buy those Euros....
remember, this is to buy a European spec van and to get the same spec as the uk, one might have to spend quite a bit more, so proper honest calculation is needed to establish a true comparison...

I think you mean when the pound is strong BB i.e. the more € you get for each £ makes the van cheaper either to import or buy in UK.
I think the savings seem to come where the UK prices are or seem to be hiked up versus the cost to buy over there directly in €, but of course less risk, no FX costs and somewhat easier. Seems some vans are say €80k over there and the UK dealers charge £80k here.

yes, I corrected myself in the earlier post.....with associated excuses for a confused post....
however, Michaels point re higher dealer mark up here is valid....(selling far more vans, keeping overall cost per van down.....) unlike JVB's twaddle
if you want a real bargain, I've found that buying a UK stock vehicle just as the new season vans are coming in can save you a packet.
my new van was registered in 2017, just like a lot of the new season vans, however my saving was 'significant'....
ive done this twice with the last two vans...
the previous time I had a choice of about 4 vans.....choose any one, all at the same negotiated price....choose best fit for spec, colour etc....
this time, last Jan, I had a choice of three....all cheaper (new) than a 1 yr old one I'd seen at another dealer...

Yes, buying vehicles from "over there" can be worthwhile, we've had several cars imported by a specialist dealer, often coming with more kit and at a lower price. But sometimes dealers are unhappy with non UK spec when it's time to sell....
As always, do your research, and your sums, thoroughly.....!
