When we bought our EV we did a lot of research and asked a lot of questions from the dealer. We discussed power sources, size of battery, charging processes etc., etc. We tend to find that as with a conventional car sometimes we use less "fuel" other times more. Occasionally we let the battery run as low as possible to give the charge an extra boost. We tend to put it on charge after the last journey each day which might be afternoon or evening, overnight or even not at all if there is power left. There is no fixed pattern. I would suggest to the OP that he asks his dealer for more information if he intends to go ahead with a purchase.

I can use the Alde heating and hot water on 2 kw without tripping but when I tried using it on 3 kw during the winter cold spell, it tripped and the only other appliance on electric was the fridge/ freezer.

Do you mean the site post tripped or the breaker in your van?

Either way with the Alde on 3 kw and fridge / battery charger on you are very close to the 16 amp limit. All it takes is a breaker tripping at slightly below 16 amps for it to become a problem. Hopefully you won't find it always to be the case, otherwise it would mean using the fridge on gas while you charge the car.

This is the sort of detail the OP needs to look at, sites like this provide  a lot of information. Whether the electric kettle will have to be jettisoned for a few hours or even longer depends on various things.

Not really a problem if fridge off for 6 hours overnight and door closed. Still an efficient cool box

My guestimate is around 1.3 kw left for total usage, depending on the exact draw of the car Malcolm has mentioned he intends to use so maybe a bit more or a bit less. Using on line conversion tables is the easiest way to work usage out.

Warmer weather versus cold etc will vary the results too.

Buy a low wattage kettle. Many available around 900 watts which will give you a bit of leeway. I think you are also going to have to seriously think about using more gas and in your circumstances a refillable system would be advantageous.

If drawing 3kw already (even ignoring fridge and charger) 900 watt is too much as 3.9kw at 230 volt is nearly 17 amp

To be sure all MM needs to do is switch off the charger for the car when he uses all the other electrical appliances in his van. In the coldest nights he can have his aldi on at it's lowest setting to keep the van warm.

I thought his car needed 3kw?. Lowest Alde is 1kw. That is more than available?

If he charges for 6 hours when depth of winter he can get up when his nose turns blue and turn on the gas heating. wink

I think it would be better to use a stove top kettle on gas, we use ours all the time, especially useful for non ehu pitches. Malcolm will need to tot up all the appliances they use....less is more if wanting to get through the winter without frostbite.

But that will cost money, although I suppose he will get some Tesco points when he purchases the gas.wink

    Thank you Easy T.

Maybe with Electric cars becoming more popular the club might install dedicated charging bollards in their car park.

The alternative is a fast charge off site. So there are other ways to do it.    smile wink
