Aberbran Club Site
What a gem of a site - peace and tranquility indeed and not a soul here but ourselves and the volunteer Wardens - it is a real shame that non-facility sites are under used.
Last week we were at another non-facility site Bromyard Downs and only 4 caravans midweek on the lower part of the site!

My post wasn't about volunteer wardens - it was about under used non-facility sites and a real concern about the trend for on site shops/dog friendly restaurants/serviced pitches etc leaving our non-facility sites empty - its a shame and i fear we are going to lose them.

I agree with that. We love this type of site.

John, it's a small site, 22 pitches and less than half are hardstandings. And it's got no toilet block.
You're going to either be drawn to that sort of site, as you are, or give it a massive miss as I would. And most other people by the look of things....................

Have you been to what was the cc site at ilam in Derbyshire? it is now run by the National Trust with volunteers the Gold mines site in Wales is now also run by National trust volunteers as are a lot of National Trust properties,,the cc also have volunteers assisting on some sites as well as running the one in this Thread

Like you we use Aberbran. Unfortunately the NT site at Ilam is now closed ( to make a bigger car park) Volunteers do it and are not forced by the organisation. Unfortunately here some posters will twist everything you put out. May be Aberbran is a little remote compared to Brecon Beacons, with closeness to town, the canal and bus routes. Of late we have used Brecon instead.

We will be using the site next month, really looking forward to our visit. We love the no facility sites.

It's the obsession with hard standings, serviced pitches ,dog friendly pubs, bus stops at the site entrance The list goes on, my requirements are only a tap for water but if that was missing I would still manage quite happily. When camping off piste you require nothing but sadly most have lost the plot and we will lose these sites.

Thinking about it the gin palaces some members drag around and drive you only need a space to stop over but they seem to be the ones that's require all the facilities, bit of a joke really.

Obsession? not at all, I just want to have the same as I do at home without the worry and cost of the stuff I'll need to make it so. Far cheaper to plug the orange cord in and use a proper toilet!
I don't expect less on holiday and it's the way I want to spend my time away.
btw I don't call the way you spend your time in a van away an obsession?

Correct it is not an obsession with me but others it is, note the increase in serviced pitches,drive over waste,dog washes the list goes on and the smaller site's will go, well from the CMC anyway.

Yes the Clubs low facility sites are not as popular as the main sites but in my experience they are still well used.
I do think that a lot depends on location. Three non facility sites come to mind as being very popular; Cadeside, Cae Mawr on Anglesey and Bourton on the Water. The site at Much Wenlock also seemed popular but sadly no longer part of CC

It allways seemed strange many years ago when has a family camped at Denny Wood in the new forest, a non facility site at the time and full of tents,her indoors required a shower so we went to another site with all the facilities might have been Brockenhurst and it was full with caravans, the site with no facilities was used by campers with no facilities and the site with full facilities was used by campers with full facilities.
With caravan's and motorhomes getting more luxurious by the day,why do they need more site facilities when in fact they need less, it is all very strange and probably shows more about us.

Probably a primeval herding instinct where anything that does not conform is driven out, the urge to get a motor home is calling.....
but I will fight it a little longer😐
