Caravan Hob

Hi All,

I hope I've put this post in the right place.

We have a bailey ranger and it has a hob with a glass lid. There are some rubber stoppers which are secured by screws that go into the main part of the hob, but these keep falling out.

I was wondering if anyone had advice on how best to secure them. We have tried getting the official spinflo parts from bailey parts (both screw and rubber stopper as 2nd hand dealer ones were two different screws stoppers) and we have tried screwing them in and putting superglue around the screw but this didn't work either.

We would like to get them sorted as we are worried it is putting pressure on the hinge of the glass top during travel but we are at a bit of a loss so any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Laura

You say youve tried super glue on threads of the screws ...... was that general use super glue? There are specific Loctite thread locking glues.

The problem is that the stoppers are screwed into the very thin metal with self tappers. A slightly thicker screw may solve the problem (reduce the head diameter on a grinding wheel if necessary).  For an adhesive I would choose a modern mastic/adhesive such as 'StixAll', leaving it for several days to cure; or a polyurethane adhesive/sealant like SikaFlex which will cure rather faster.

After reading this post I had a look at my hob (I too have a Ranger) and one of my 'stoppers' is missing!  I have to admit that I had not noticed this until now so I assume it has been missing for many years.  The missing one, left, is perilously close to the flame, a medium size saucepan would almost touch it, so maybe has melted away!!  Will try to source replacement when I get back from a short break.

Post Edit.  They are on Bailey Parts at £1.99 each!

The reason there is no "stopper" fitted at that place is because"it is very close to a flame! It was never designed to have one there!!!!!

I assume these stoppers are to locate the glass hob cover in transit, if so would it not be possible to glue them to the glass, then the heat from hob would not affect them when in use.

Provided the hob is left to cool down what is wrong with folding a tea towel/s and placing under the glass lid whilst travelling

Thanks dsw, only been caravanning since 1971 a much wiser mansealed -  and saved the risk of having to clean up a mess on the hob!  The rubber just supports the hob in transit and stops it banging on the pan supports.  Suppose you could let the gas ring  cool and then place a tea towel under glass cover.  Milo why don't you try putting some of that tape plumbers use to seal joints around the screw to see if helps; if not, suggest a slightly larger screw as suggested  by vicm.   On my Ranger the design would not allow gluing onto the glass.

Off on a short break now - bye.

    Wow

several suggestions to try and help OP solve their problem from various posters doesn't warrant that response.

throw your dummie out of pram springs to mind.

Use bolts with nuts on the underside?

I have a sheet of that perforated sticky plastic sold for lining toolbox drawers that protects the top of the glass when the caravan is occupied, and I stick it underneath the glass when towing.  I'll look for these stoppers when next in the caravan.

Thank you everyone for replying, there are some useful suggestions on here. I have just used generic super glue so I think I might try some slightly bigger screws with better glue.

Unfortunately I don't think I can use bolts as I can't get my hands behind the wooden counter top. That would have been ideal though!

As I recall there are small metal 'raw plug' type fixings that are pushed into the hole in the metal and the screw is then fastened into it.

For the life of me I cannot remember what they are called. Something in name and function similar to Spire speed nuts.
