GDPR
I expect I am not the only one getting dozens of e-mails asking me if it's OK for companies to continue to send me e-mails in line with the General Data Protection Regulations. What puzzles me is that some just send you an e-mail asking you to have a look at their privacy policy where as others want you to go online and confirm, by ticking a box, that you are happy to continue receiving e-mails. You would would have thought there would be only one way to do this but there seems to be at least two!!! I suppose it's a wonderful opportunity to cut down on what appears in your inbox by ignoring them

Giles Coren, in Saturday's Times, called it 'Spamageddon' relishing the prospect of getting rid of all those irritating "offers".

I had an e-mail from the Club on 9th May and I quote:-
"You may be aware that a new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) comes into effect 25 May 2018
This means that from the 25 May we will be publishing an updated Privacy Policy to reflect the requirements of the General Data Protection Regulation. You can view the Club’s Privacy Policy online at www.camc.com/privacy-policy.
The Club has always been dedicated to protecting members’ data and personal information, and we want you to know that this respect for your data and privacy is continuing as we adapt to the requirements of the new EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force on 25 May 2018".

It is obligatory for advertising Emails to provide an ‘unsubscribe’ option.
These are generally hidden, at the bottom of the advert, in a very small font with low contrast to the background. In general they do work, although quite a few advertisers make them difficult to use. In the latter case I use the automatic filter to route them directly to Spam.

There seems to be no consistency. Some to which I subscribe like the CC just seem to be continuing as before, but point out you can change preferences / withdraw at any time. Others like English Heritage asked for permission and for me to reassess my preferences.
Those that I don't subscribe to and have just bought products from seem to handle it in two ways. One is to ask permission and get you to put in your details again. The second to tell you they will continue sending info, but give you the option to unsubscribe.
So far the majority of those I want to continue have asked for permission, where as those I don't have just given the option to unsubscribe. Wether that works, we will just have to wait and see.
oh it's not just the CC with technical gremlins. I received a do you want to continue from Morris Leisure a few days ago. However, when I tried to input my responses, they were in invisible ink, so it was difficult to tell what you were doing. A second email came yesterday with an apology, saying they had technical issues and providing a new link that worked.

The whole thing is a bit time consuming, to be honest. It effects all organisations however small. We are having to send out emails to choir members asking them to give permission for us to contact them etc., then we have to keep and file their replies. Fortunately, our Secretary has just been on a course and she has passed the GDPR test! 😀

When I got back from most recent trip to Cornwall the in box on this 'ere Desk-top PC was darn near at the upper limit.
The one I did appreciate was from Faceache with a route out of their claws and back to sanity. Only seven days left until they get the e-snowpake out !!
