Terrible to read and see the photos of caravans destroyed by fire at Sandford Caravan park, Dorset. Luckily no one was injured.  Please be careful everyone.

So much for the six metre spacing! How lucky no one was injured!

Here is a link to some more pictures. What I found interesting was that units in the row behind were affected.

PS I have moved this to Caravans and Motorhome Chat as I think motorhomers need to see this as well!

any indication of what the cause was, would be interesting if rules were followed. good thing about this was no injuries.

Exploding gas bottle it says on reports. Goodness knows how a gas bottle explodes without someone fiddling about with it, in which case someone would have been killed. Unless it was just left out in Sun, in which case.......boom! Same with aerosol cans left on a sunshine window!

Safety rules & regs. . . .They are there for a reason. There’ll be a whole mess of trouble happening now with insurance & finger pointing☹️

    That could explain the spread.

Spacing regs didn't do much to stop the spread of fire though .... 🙄

MM, if they’ve not been followed(you can’t tell from a photo) it certainly won’t do much for the owners bank balance☹️

If a gas cylinder is involved, the current regs are useless. You are completely at the mercy of other people using common sense, and a good deal of luck on a busy site. There certainly is nothing like enough space on most sites, be they Club or not. The spacing only involves the sleeping outfits not awnings, vehicles, and the greenery around! The fire just hops from one to another, unless the blast in this case sent burning debris in all directions.

      • Gas bottles don't explode in the sun, if it was caused by gas it was more likely due to a leak being ignited.

And that's easier than you think!  We had one of those small campingaz cylinders leak when my OH was trying to push it home into the fitting.  It ignited and flames were coming straight out of the so called valve!  Fortunately he had the presence of mind to throw it over into a nearby field where it burned fiercely for ages.  We kept it under control by throwing water on the grass around, but if it had happened in the awning....................!

Side to side the spacing doesn’t seem to be not far off 6m.

Just think of the consequences over there with a lot of sites crammed like sardines.  surprised It doesn’t bear thinking about

Doesn't look as the 6m rule was used? Difficult to tell though. Anyway an exploding gas bottle would probably make the 6m rule redundant, I would have thought the 6m rule is to stop 'normal' fires spreading?

    Good no one was hurt.

The only thing that matters is that no-one was injured. Hopefully, the people involved were able to return home safely.

At least on a CL the vans are well spaced,   .. Much more than the 6 Meter spacings  which as this incident has proved is totally inadequate.
