Since 1999, red kite chicks have been distributed to re-establish colonies around the country,
In the United Kingdom, populations of red kites now occur in:
The Chilterns
Mid Wales
North Scotland (Inverness)
Central Scotland (Stirling)
Southern Scotland (Dumfries)
The Midlands
Yorkshire
Gateshead
Aberdeen
Northern Ireland (Co Down)Having said that two were spotted in north Kent just last week, so Somerset is certainly a possibility

They've worked their way steadily down the A34 and have started along the A303, no doubt encouraged by the availability of roadkill. Haven't spotted any west of Mere yet though.
