Help - water leak and we're away

we noticed water dripping underneath van near wheel arch. Investigation indicates a leak somewhere in the pump fitting. The water squirts when the taps are switched on and the floor is wet under the battery box running back towards the wheel. We're airing it now and our plan tomorrow is to unscrew the pump unit from the outside and see if we can spot the leak or just buy a new unit if necessary. We are not experienced caravanners so wondered if it is this easy. When I say the pump unit I just mean the bit where the water enters the caravan. It looks like water is squirting into the caravan from the filter section of the unit. I will see if I can post a photo below. Any advice appreciated.

You don't say what caravan you have our the brand of water inlet. However I had a similar problem with my Lunar Delta and the Truma water inlet.

The factory had overtightened the screws holding the water inlet causing stress cracks to form. The cracks reached the tube that you push the water pump into. This meant that every time the water was switched on it was being pumped into the van.

I tried to glue the crack and bind it right, but to no avail. In the end the unit was replaced by a mobile mechanic what we were on site. It took about an hour.

Stress cracks are a well known issue on 2016 Lunars and others have posted about them.

Thanks for your reply. We have a Lunar Venus 2014 with a Truma water unit. Now we've looked at the unit it looks like there are hairline cracks near the water inlet, nails on the cover. It does look like it will be the same solution to replace the water inlet unit. As we're away and there's a caravan shop nearby does anyone have experience of replacing the unit yourself. We are struggling with 3G at present so may not be able to respond but any further info will be appreciated. Thank you

Had same problem of broken inlet last year when out in caravan. Replaced inlet onsite with biggest problem being getting a new one since all  nearest dealers to site had none in stock, I think a lot must crack. Removing old unit was time consuming as it had been fitted using silicone by caravan manufacturer even though the instruction on the replacement said use none setting sealant.

Job was more time consuming than difficult.

l know some are expensive but try a mobile caravan service engineer make sure they have the the experience you should be able to determine this online. they usually have call out fee of £50 plus labour plus parts. Good luck which ever way you choose

We had a similar problem with the housing. Thankfully ours leaked to the outside but was caused by tightening the filter housing cap too much when changing the filter. I have cured it by removing and disposing of the filter completely and building up a good coating over the crack with 2 part epoxy resin adhesive, giving the area a good rough up with sandpaper first to get a good key. That was two years ago and so far no further problems. Not having a filter doesn't make any difference apart from massive cost savings for the replacement filters!

I think Truma should acknowledge that there is a design / material fault with the housing and offer a replacement to anyone affected, even if the 'van is out of warranty. When I spoke to them they said I had to remove the old housing and send it to them for inspection and, only then would they consider supplying a replacement. To get mine repaired under warranty was going to cost quite a lot as I'd either got to take my caravan on a 200 mile round trip or get the mobile engineer I use to do it but Truma wouldn't pay his call out / traveling costs. I understand it is actually quite an easy job to replace needing just a supply of new mastic to bed the housing on. It is for this reason I used epoxy resin and achieved a perfect solution.

Thanks everyone. We managed to get the unit out and can see the water is squirting quite alot just on the inside of where the pump fits....right near the electric points. Whist we have got the housing off we are struggling to disconnect the electric points and the interanal water pipe so we have bitten the bullet and have a mobile engineer who services the site wardens caravan coming this afternoon. Not good at diy so don't want to spend any more of hols doing it.again thanks for your comments....they have helped.
