Bed Gas Strut

Opened our bed bases up fully this afternoon without any cushions on (for the first time) and both gas struts seemed to lock, nothing would persuade them to close we both had a go at closing looking for something to release and applying as much force as sensible. Fortunately the other half insisted on going out, came back couple of hours later and they both closed with hardly any effort?
