New Booking System

"I find posts about booking and prices totally boring"
+1
I think we all know the usual contributors opinion on these subjects (and I include myself in that), plus dogs, arrival/departure times, H/S v grass, speeding etc etc.
There is only so much that can be said time after time on the same handful of subjects........
But JK's post is intriguing........
Can it be a) Deposits are being introduced, b) book a surface type or c) Calors new lightweight cylinders....

I didn't read anything in it at all TT, I was struggling to phrase a reply but thought even if JK was right about too much negativity, at least the Club has the oppportunity to respond which they couldn't do officially on other forums on the web which, prior to the Club establishing this forum, used to slag off the Club quite a lot. If the Club was worried about it they could easily make it just for members only. On the whole I would like to think some good has come out of it rather than all bad!

Peedee,
I was referring to this bit of one of JK's posts.....
"I don't know about any other "upgrades", but I can see this forum getting mighty lively this year wink wink"
I was rather hoping with his inside knowledge that there were further changes coming this year that we can all moan about, sorry, discuss....

Ah I see, I for one am glad to see a few members of staff making comments even if their fingers cannot reveal the whole story. I suspect introducing any further changes especially to the booking system will all be down to what IT can deal with.

I would like to make an argument against booking in advance. One of the things I find most attractive about caravanning is the opportunity to be spontaneous. The weather forecast looks good next week and so I will go on holiday - follow the sun. I am also very keen on touring - not parking up in one spot and staying there for weeks. I like to wake up on one site in the morning and decide there and then where I would like to go that day.
If you know when you are going to take a holiday and where you want to be for a week or so why not book a cottage and stay in that??
CAMC should not allow sites to become completely full - some touring pitches should be set aside on each site until 12 noon and be let on a "first come first served basis".

Firstly why would I want to spend extra on a cottage when I have a fantastic take with me cottage. I want to and decided to spend my holidays in a caravan.
Interesting idea but a few flaws for that working on a club site.
so I turn up, after travelling a few hours, and of course I now turn up even earlier to get in the queue for those pitches - and they're gone, what do I do now? Go home? start to travel to the next club site in the hope of some pitches left? Ring round to find a site?
From the club's point of view why would it possibly give up a full site with all that more or less guaranteed income to leave some pitches possibly empty?
Your idea wouldn't be practical for those who either work and have definite time off, or families who again can't take the risk of not finding a pitch.
But the good news is that other sites are available and CL's would be a good choice for this?

As my staff often said to me ,"what are you doing this w/end?" and my reply was, "I am going to my cottage in the country"if asked "where is that" my reply was always "where ever OH has booked for us to go"
Ps and sometimes it was not a cc site
PPs that of course if i was not on call duty officer, then it would always be Ferry Meadows ,because i could access my area from there

I like the idea of spontaneous touring.-------- Booking a holiday pitch months in advance is too much like a package holiday.
Turning up at a site on spec and paying for a couple of days and extending the stay if the area is interesting, used to be the way with the Caravan Club. Now that it's a hard nosed commercial retailer of goods and services, they are desperate to fill every pitch by the supply/demand theory. Don't have enough spaces for the needs of the Customers so that they have so much trouble to do real touring that they have to restrict themselves to pre-booking X number of days at each site.
By the way, it's not the first time I've heard the general public ask the question " Tell me where you are taking your "mobile road blocker" this weekend and I'll be sure to go a different way " Just goes to show what the general public really think about caravan outfits and those who drive them.

We tour, K ,for example we're away for about 10 weeks this trip and staying at over 12 sites, except we do book our sites in advance but tour round from each one.
I have never heard, in out 45+ yrs of caravanning, anyone say to us "Tell me where you are taking your "mobile road blocker" this weekend and I'll be sure to go a different way ". You must talk to some very odd people!!

I thought the Bessacarr was more suited to K.

It would depend on the area where you live AD. I regularly just turned up at CC sites like Killin. Bunree and Morvich among others, on a last minute decision and was always made welcome without forward booking. I normally paid for 2 nights and if required, it was always possible to extend my stay.
Your last sentence is absolutely spot on AD - There are some who are burying their heads in the sand, and not facing up to opinions in the real world, where towed Caravan outfits are not popular among the road using public.
Motorhomes seem to be more acceptable, especially those smaller PVC versions

where towed Caravan outfits are not popular among the road using public.
Neither are M/Hs especially where they take up two parking spots & travel in convoy and dump all their waste around their fly camping site, (see the N500 post).

"Also the unspoilt is becoming spoilt by litter and trash dumped anywhere"
...is what was actually posted .....
no mention in that 500 thread that MHers were 'dumping all their waste around their fly camping site" whatever that is......
perhaps it was being thrown from the cars of caravaners, the posting does not say which, if either.....it just refers to litter being dumped.
it may have nothing to do with vanners of either persuasion...
i think you've read in something that wasnt posted.....certainly not that I could find in that thread....

I think one of the "myths" that c/vans hold up "reps" has been proven on several occasions when towing we have been following a car(normally) on a single carriageway road at 50mph or lower, and a car trys to overtake us without realising there is another vehicle in front as they cannot see it,which they would not do with an HGV

It's glaringly obvious from this thread and others that there is much resentment by the traditional caravanner to those who prefer to tour by Motorhome.
This does not show itself.on campsites but it is a real shame that it rears its head. on the forum.
Imo , there is no reason to adopt the us and them attitude. Having been a. Motorhomer and a caravanner I see no reason why both methods cannot co-exist. harmoniously.

Well you say that, K, but to be honest, I must have missed those resentful posts (perhaps you could point them out to save me reading back through the thread!). I agree there should be no place on the forum for posts trying to stir up bad feeling between members enjoying different types of experience. And you're right that on site it doesn't exist. Maybe we can look forward to the time when MH owners (particularly recent converts) stop trying to wind up caravanners (which they themselves may have been till recently) and vice versa. It's all about each of us enjoying our hobby in our own way, isn't it? No better or worse, only different!
