My daughter and her partner are now showing an interest in purchasing a caravan. Being in their mid twenties what exactly does the law say about towing for them. Being a motorhomer theses days and with grandfather rights as regards towing I'd hate to mislead them so clarity would be welcomed.smile

Not that DVLA website(s) are all that clear.

Neither is old enough to have obtained the entitlements that were available in the past, so they are quite limited without passing further tests.

Just do not rely on what salesmen tell them.

For young drivers with a car driving licence they can say only tow a car and caravan with a combined maximum authorised mass below 3500kg - above that they need an additional licence to tow.

    I think THIS

government site is more helpfull.  Essentially if they have ordinary car licences they are restricted to a total MAM of 3500kg for car+ caravan.

There are still plenty of combinations which fall within the limit.

For heavier combinations they will need to take the additional towing test.

Thanks folk for the prompt help. The test costs I see about £150 at weekends. As I've been towing all my driving life and looking at the test detail it doesn't look to complex so could a competent father, yes me, my dad taught me to tow, provide the necessary tuition and save costs? Would be good to hear from anyone who has experience of this test.

One needs to provide a suitable trailer, suitably loaded, and with weight certificates. I believe caravans are not accepted but I can't see that written down anywhere at present.

Some knowlege of the current trick questions is helpful, as is knowing the likely test routes.  So a qualified instructer can actually be a money saver.
