Truma water filter change
I bought a filter cartridge and was surprised to read on the package that It is supposed to be replaced every 35 days. I've been leaving it in all season, having it changed with the annual service by Catterick caravans.
At £13 a pop it seems an expensive thing to change every month, adding £80 to a seasons caravanning.
What do you do?

As I recall the words 35 days are followed by the words......of use.! and in any event....I stick to tonic water or coffee !

To make a bug happy generally it requires 3 things.
1 Water
2 A Carbon source
3 This is less well appreciated is they generally require something to stick to and activated carbon has a huge surface area.
Filters of the Truma type don’t take bugs out. Generally they add to the bacterial load. What they do do is absorb chlorine based chemicals that water companies put in. This may subjectively improve taste and the majority of the bacteria is completely harmless to healthy individuals.

The manufacturer of a product,made by nobody else, recommends changing their product frequently !! Now there's a thing .
There is no need. If it affcects you that much get one of the water filter jugs.

It’s yet another example of style over substance - manufacturers adding more and more extras but not improving the quality of the basic product. We took ours out but then we didn’t drink from the caravan taps we filled a separate container. You could keep a filter jug in the fridge.
We have two separate water filters at home and they last a year each.

why would you filter water used for washing up and showering?Swift for one,have not used a filter system for years.

I broke off the element back end keeping the front sealing piece intact.
If you want to eek out the genuine useful life remove the whole element and dry it out so it is only "wet" when in use, not wet and stagnant when not using the van. Here again the sealing end of an old cartridge is good to put in place to limit the residences available for spiders etc.
I would not have one, as simple as that.

I have been replacing my filter at the start of each season but after reading this thread I will remove it this year. We use a different container for drinking water or filling the kettle.

Well, I'd better own up. My wife always reminds me to sterilise the containers and pipes before each trip, so I take the filter out, then flush the system through before replacing it.
Then she uses a separate container that she uses to fill a filter jug......
The Truma system is a pain anyway. It's brittle, insubstantial and not very reliable. I see the Whale system gets recommended elsewhere so I might throw caution to the winds and invest in one of those.

I cut the filter bit off but retain the top bit as a seal.
