Hi everyone, my name is vicky, I am looking at coming to the above area in August, I have a husband, a 13 year old a mother and 2 dogs in tow. I am wondering if anyone can name a few reasonably small/quiet sites. I know it's a big ask with it being the school holidays but I'm trying to avoid the free for all sites where parents don't watch their children whilst they race round campsites on bikes and scooters.  Last year I booked a site in Derbyshire which on paper and website looked perfect but turned out to be a bit of a disaster resulting in our vehicle getting damaged. Can anyone please help as the last trip has made me a little nervous.

Many Thanks

It is a big ask coming to a holiday area in August.

As a general rule, sites in coastal areas will be far busier than those inland and, in your shoes, I would particularly avoid Torbay in Devon and the North coast of Somerset around Burnham and Brean.

One site that nearly always seems to be quiet is the club site at Modbury but some of the roads in the area aren't for the faint hearted - which maybe why the site is quiet.

Alternatively, you could search out a CL.

agreed, the Minehead site usually 'seems' fairly quiet, we use it often, handy for the town, good walking in either direction, can visit Dunster by car, bike, bus or on foot...other towns/villages on bus routes or easy car trips.

Hi Vicky,   It may be difficult to find a really quiet site in that area in August, We have however in the past used Halse Farm Caravaning &Camping at Winsford. It's only a small site right on Exmoor so excellent for dog walking. It was all grass apart from the entrance road, so children tended not to race round on bikes. There is a play area and in August children playing, but as you have a 13 yr old too they can make friends.

The club site at Dulverton is usually quiet as there is no play area.

You could also look for a CL in the area, as has been suggested.

Hope you find somewhere, don't let one bad experience put you off. smile

Some good suggestions for you Vickster. I'd probably repeat the Modbury suggestion as it's close to some lovely beaches and it's also easy to reach Plymouth and Salcombe where you'll find things to do plus Dartmoor just behind you. smile

Thanks for your suggestions I will look at the more all now, I had been looking at dulverton, will see what's to do in the area. One of the main reasons I joined this site was to get feedback from others,

    Thanks loads 🙂

Dulverton is a nice little village (we were there for the Starlight evenings in November) but it is small and will be fully explored pretty quickly.

walking is nice from the site, along the river and can even visit Tarr Steps arpund 5m away....

however, anything else is likely to take you well away from the site....

having 'done' it, I'd be far more inclined to head for Minehead where there is more for you all to do.....even Butlins (if that's your thing..)

Dulverton is lovely for trips out on Exmoor and a good town where dogs are welcome in most places. However the trips out will involve some lengthy drives once the local bits have been explored.

Minehead is handy for Minehead itself, dogs are allowed on part of the beach in the main season. There is excellent access to the N Devon coast and Exmoor. The steam train is lovely, good for exploring the coast from various stops. Local shops are within walking distance from the site. A good base on a small site, avoid the top section of the old quarry setting which can be very shady.

Having said that Minehead itself will be far from quiet in August but you'll find the site is a fairly peaceful retreat and you might even spot the red deer who visit. It's an unusual  little haven for wild life.
