Lunar Delta Water Tank
The onboard water tank contents on my 2016 Lunar Delta does not display correctly. The dealer has changed the tank unit twice now and adjusted it once. Each time it appears to work for a short while but then reads either full when it is in fact empty or empty when it is full. This stops the tank from being able to be filled or makes it switch to the external pump even though water is available in the onboard tank. I have seen threads here (but cannot find them using the search facility) where others have had similar issues with the system and wonder if anyone has had any success in making a permanent fix. It seems to me that the problem lies with the probes used to sense the water level but there appears to be no way to work arounf them to force the tank to fill.

Hi AndyNYorks, we have exactly the same problem with our Lunar Delta 2017 so the system is still no better! We understand that for 2018 the system is different. We have contacted Duncan Berry at Lunar twice to ask if they have got a permanent fix for this ongoing, frustrating, problem suffered by us and many, many others. We got this not very helpful reply. -
"Thank you for your email and apologies that you are having sustained difficulties as detailed and discussed previously
As the part in question is a warrantable part by either the electrical supply system or the whale tank module itself, through the applicable and respective suppliers of Sargent’s Electrical and Truma, we would suggest for the dealer to make appropriate enquiries with either or both of these moving forward, their contact details being;
Sargent Electrical Services Ltd (Customer Support)
Tel – 01482 678981
Email – support@sargentltd.co.uk
Truma
Tel – 01709 766770
Email – warranty@truma.com
Should the dealer require parts, we can support them and despatch to on receipt of a warrantable claim, as indeed could both of the above, as they do in order to support the dealer / repair centre network and ultimately the end user customer" -In other words they aren't admitting there is a problem or they don't know how to fix it!! Our caravan is going into the dealer again just after Easter but we hold out little hope that the situation will improve permanently!

well, i guess he's telling you that the responsibility to 'fix' the issue is with the dealer (who must 'own' the problem) and that they might need help from two named suppliers to do so....
thats all well and good (in consumer law) but you would hope that repeated feedback from these 'problem owners' would have inspired Mr Berry and his team to have improved this 'system', with the help of his named suppliers...
water level gauges are notorious for being totally useless and to have a system of water filling (or not) based on the readings of one of these seems optimistic in the extreme.....
we just bung a hose in our MH inlet until water comes out of the spout.....tank full....
ISTM, its the option to have filling from two sources (internal tank or external barrel) that makes this an overcomplicated system...
do any caravans just have an internal tank like a MH? I can see the advantage of not having your water supply outside in the cold and that there needs to be a way of getting water from a distant tap to the tank, so why not just pump it in from the barrel.....under user control...
then all 'supply' would come from the internal tank and the fact that the gauge read inaccurately wouldn't make any difference

MM, not an improvement then....

Thanks for your replies guys. As I suspected it seems to be a commmon fault so it's back to the dealer to see if they can do anything else.

It would be nice if caravans had large internal tanks like motorhomes but the lightweight ones that they fit are generally not suitable for use in transit and need to be drained before setting off, also the payload for a filled, strengthened, tank would be unacceptable on a caravan.
We had an internal Fiamma tank on a Bailey Unicorn but it was worse than useless and they discontinued it. Good if you caravan in the winter but for general touring I never saw the benefit unless you can travel with just a few litres for emergency use but bear in mind that 1 litre = 1kg! That was enough to push our towball weight up to 120kg on our Bailey the first time we tried it.

The Lunar system seems overly complicated as compared with that in our U3 Barcelona which, although not the most convenient system, works OK. There isn't a level gauge for the onboard tank and to fill it requires lifting up one of the seat bases to manually switch over a valve, thereby allowing the Aquaroll pump to divert its flow to the onboard tank instead of the taps. (Much to my surprise, it actually fills the onboard tank the 'wrong' way through its pump). The tank is full when you hear / see it overflowing and from thereon, it's guesswork as to how much is in there! Turning the valve back when full re-directs the Aquaroll contents back to the taps. Selection thereafter, is done via a two-way rocker switch (selecting either external or internal tanks) on the main control panel. I keep threatening to put a 12v electric switch- over valve to replace the manual one under the seats but haven't got round to it yet.
I wonder if, in the absence of any other solution, it's worth considering simplifying your system along these lines?

Our Sterling is somewhat similar to your old van, though all functions are carried out by the single on board pump, and we just have a pipe from the aquaroll.
We have valves that can be set to fill the onboard tank from the aquaroll, or use from that tank, or use direct from the aquaroll, none of this complicated auto fill stuff, that is so annoying when it does not work!
We do have a level gauge with probes that show empty, one quarter, half, three quarters and full. Once I adjusted the lengths they record fairly accurately.
Yet another reason why we are hanging on to our 10 year old van!
Newer is not always better.

Our 2015 Delta is back to Campbells for 'water' problems later this month.
Additional to the control panel showing full when there is not one drop of water in there, the control panel is holding the solenoid valve in the wrong position so that I can't get water into the onboard tank. Fortunately this means it is pumping into the caravan so we can still use it.
The 2018 water system has been simplyfied, but only by having two water inlets on the side of the van and a manual changeover valve in place of the solenoid valve.
