Anglesey to Gower best route with a caravan please

Good morning,

We will be travelling from

Anglesey to Gower with our caravan this summer but the Coast road looks very twisty turny and steep.  Can anyone advise a route through which is easier or has anyone travelled the route and advise whether it’s not as bad as it seems.

    No motorways between North & South.The A roads are excellent, plenty of HGV and Buses use them. It may take longer than you think. Why rush through the best part of Wales? Cross either bridge from Anglesey to the A5.Follow Ffestiniog ( the pass is OK). On Entering Ffestiniog take 2nd exit at Roundabout and you will reach the A487.Then A470 to Builth Wells. Then A487 toM40. Near enough then to the Gower. Easy. If in doubt pull in behind a Mansel Davies tanker going south.

    I once drove (pre sat nav) from Colwyn Bay in the north to Carmarthen in the south with no caravan in tow, and it is etched in my memory as to how long it took.due to such twisty roads. 4 hours to do 130 Miles. Make sure you allow plenty of time as you will likely be behind whatever you are behind, as chances of overtaking are slim.

    We've just returned from Anglesey,  and though I dare say its possible to negotiate a caravan through the narrow Menai Bridge, I'd prefer not to, after all, it was designed for a horse & cart. We used the new Brittania Bridge both ways ..... loads of room.

    We've done it via Aberystwyth then down towards Llanelli. Avoid places like Fishguard, allow plenty of time. smile

    I did Anglesey to Pembrokeshire a couple of summers ago, turning right after crossing from the island. Other than it being evidently slower than banging down a motorway, I can't recall any of the journey being a cause for concern. That was back before I joined the dark side and was towing an Abbey 470.

    Until the late 70’s the Menai Bridge was the only way on lorries and buses used it.  Apparently it is a foot wider in one direction so on occasions it was shut off so wider loads could  go on the wrong side off the road.

    I know, I've been to Anglesey a good few times as a kid. As said, I'd prefer not to tow a 7' 7" wide caravan over it 😉

    whichever route you decide please allow plenty of time as the roads are bends and hills. The coastal route has to my mind only one narrowish part and that is A487 by Corris,  or A470 to Builth, A40 to Carmarthen then A48 to M4, there is also to A470 to Brecon, then A40 to Carmarthen, there are narrower road options, but depends on your towing confidence. There will be plenty of small towns to stop en route plus beautiful scenery to admire.
