    No. just making a point about remaps which was the OP. he didn't ask about insurance or servicing or MOT's. just has anybody had it done.

    Neither did he ask if manufacturers did it but, if you want to nit pick, at least my points were relevant to an after build remap. undecided

    Perhaps the OP didn’t realise that the other aspects were relevant.   Had I been the OP I would have welcomed the thread expanding into  these areas.  We need knowledge to make informed choices.

    The OP seemed to imply he'd had his eyes opened and decided not to remap, One. (Pg 3). In which case our discussion was worthwhile in highlighting potential drawbacks and helping him reach a decision. 👍🏻

    As someone who has had around a dozen cars remapped over the past 18 years I think I have more experience than most. Marques include Citroen’s, various VW group cars, MGRover, Freelander 2, Vauxhall’s, and manuals and autos. 

    I would have no hesitation recommending a remap or plug n play tuning box and companies i recommend are DTUK for tuning boxes and CCC  of chesterfield for remaps. I recently sold an Audi A2 remapped at 28k miles from 75 to 105 horses. The mileage when sold was 156k miles Still on the original clutch, exhaust, drive shafts, CV joints and gearbox. MOT was never a problem and I always recommend giving any car a good Italian tune up before an MOT and use of premium fuels and 2SO.  

    The most extreme remap was a Vauxhall special and limited edition Astra 888 CDTi coupe built as a roadgoing version of the BTCC cars. The remap was a 2 stage tune starting life as 120 ponies and giving either 160 or 200 horses at the press of a button. That also had upgraded Brembo brakes, suspension, wheels/tyres and so on to cope with the power.

    I fitted both my PowerBox's and my Steinbauer to my three vehicles when only a month old and very happy I was with the performance and reliability.

    Instead of having a remap why not buy a more powerful car? 

    Dont understand all this remapping stuff, I just paddle along on these lovely Cornish roads with some boy racer up my rear at times trying to rush past with his modified chipped and remapped car. 

    Whats the rush

    Yes sometimes they do.

    The two diesel engines fitted to the T31 were completely different, one was 150ps the other 173ps.

    Not the same engine with different mapping.

    I have never needed premium fuel or an engine thrashing to get past a MOT.

    Not all cars are driven to their optimum on a daily basis .... those that just potter to the local shops & back and rarely get properly hot do benefit from an Italian tune-up now & then ..... Especially just before a MOT test  😉

    To clarify I run my car on Vpower or similar 100% of the time having previously used standard premium brand diesel fuels with 2SO additive and very good results. I gave the A2 an Italian tune up because of how my wife used the car. My car gets a 60 mile round trip commute most days so doesn’t need the cobwebs clearing out. As for remapping versus buying a more powerful car, a remap is cheaper and it isnt just about being faster - a well designed remap can improve economy too.

    I have a had a few cars remapped and I would say it's definitely worth it. Performance is noticeably improved and providing you are not to heavy with your right foot fuel economy can increase slightly. From a towing point of few the extra torque gained is noticeable particularly on inclines. 

    A couple of things I would personally recommend, have the remapping done somewhere with a rolling road, this way you can see exactly what figures your vehicle has to start with, the remapping can be tailored specifically and then you can see the exact increases and have a print out as proof. Alot of mapping companies don't offer this so how do you truly know if you are getting what you are paying for?

    Secondly I would only remap a vehicle out of warranty. Although some companies claim the maps are virtually undetectable, they are, particularly to main dealers with all the latest diagnostic equipment. As mapping is more popular than ever dealers tend to check vehicles ECU's haven't been messed with, particularly with engine and drive train issues and as a result may invalidate any warranty.

    One thing no one has mentioned is that if you were to remap your engine and you were unfortunately involved in a very serious accident, not only would you have possible/probable problems with your insurance company you have the police going over your car with a very fine toothcomb. And, if it was found to be modified without the insurance company knowing about it the book could well be throw in your direction. Thus a court appearance and points on your licence for not being insured!

    That’s why I asked about insurance earlier, Ian, and pointed out that people were potentially driving without valid insurance but some seemed happy to take the chance. yell

    Insurance was mentioned by me on page 3 of this thread.  I informed my insurance company the day it was done.

    You must have skimmed over the thread posts Ian, Insurance has been mentioned on nearly every page. Some being responsible and notifying them for small cost.

    Yes highly recommended for the extra torque as for towing you wouldn’t know you were.

    Tried renewing insurance with Post Office they didn’t want to know was classed as a boy racer.

    Shopped around ended up with LV £219 unmapped told them it was mapped went up to £226 cost me more for tinted windows even got a discount for a dash cam.

    Caravan runs out on 23rd will try them.

    Do the remap but tell your insurance

    I’m with LV, declared my rechip. On renewal this year my premium reduced by £26.00.  Checked my policy today and both remap and towhook documented

    It is funny that some have mentioned that the insurance aspect has been memtioned on nearly every page, but my comment about the police was completely ignored!I think I would be more worried about any police involvement!
