A big thank you!
We have a seasonal pitch at Nunnykirk CMC site, and along with everyone else went along yesterday to site our caravans for the season.
To say I was apprehensive was a bit of an understatement because with 24 hours of non stop rain I was convinced that the site would be a mud bath. However, I phoned Richard, the wardens, and he assured me it wasn't too bad.
We decided to take the caravan up and we're surprised at just how many were already set up. The thing that concerned me most was the level of the river running along the edge of the site. In the time I have been going to Nunnykirk I have never seen the level so high.
I was told that if the level rose a third of a metre the site would be placed on flood alert.. We sited our caravan and left. I was sitting at home at 2115 and had just opened a bottle of wine when my phone rang. It was Karen from Nunnykirk telling me that the site had been placed on flood alert and could I come up and move my caravan! The water level was due to peak at midnight so as a precaution the caravans on the lower fields were being moved.
I think we must have been the last ones to get there as all the caravans had been moved into the middle field. The steadies had already been raised on my caravan and when I took the hitch lock off, Richard towed my caravan off with the tractor.
As it happened, the site didn't flood, the water got to the edge of field 3 and the water level dropped by a metre overnight.
However, can I please give a big thank you to the wardens Richard and Karen for acting in plenty of time to prevent what could have been a really disastrous event for everyone. It was a bit of an inconvenience but all of our caravans are safe and that is what matters.
Also, a big thank you to everyone who helped Richard move the caravans you are all great people and this is what makes caravanners such a great bunch. ... Pulling together when it matters. I was the last one to arrive back on site and everything was over and done with once my caravan was moved so thank you for your help

I don't know the site but it does seem ludicrous that the location of the seasonal pitches would appear to be in the most vulnerable area. By definition caravans on seasonal pitches will not be attended at all times and rapid movement by the owners cannot be relied upon. What would have happened if JohnG had opened his bottle of wine 1 hr earlier?
Surely an urgent rethink is required by the CAMC.

You cannot have the prime pitches and prime pitches at the prices that seasonals are,i suspect the water levels are not normally that high,,and what i have seen of such pitches the wardens tend to keep a spare set of members keys in a sealed envelope in the site safe for an emergency when the owner was not able to be contacted,so its not a real problem,and ga great job was done in this situation by all concerned

There will always be some who say it should never happen and the wardens were wrong to allow the river to rise but you’ve given us a positive view.

Envy you a seasonal pitch on lovely Nunnykirk! One of our favourite sites as well, so unspoilt. Very well done to the Wardens. Not sure if they are the same ones, but we had some great advice about staying a couple of years ago, very friendly and saved us having a problem. Hope things go well for rest of season!
