If travelling to the SW via the A303 there is a good rest area at Cartgate near Yeovil, accessed from the roundabout. There are picnic tables, toilets and a cafe but no fuel (available nearby.)

For those who have other holidays than in caravans and motorhomes a week in a cottage on one of the smaller islands of the Isles of Scilly is as beautiful as anywhere we know -  our favourite is St Agnes, but Bryher and St Martins also have their own fan clubs. The weather is unpredictable, the costs are high and the flights out in the tiny planes from Lands End airfield are expensive - but if all goes well you will be hooked.

It was roasting the day we sailed to Isles of Scilly, first thing we did on island was shot to nearest beach and went swimming. Sadly it was only a day, but I would go back, but not on the dreaded Scillonian. I came back on the helicopter, that was a great experience. Lots to see and do, would love to hop around islands. I had a couple of extra hours on St Mary's, once the Scillonian had sailed, and it was very quiet.

Lovely ET! I was so ill on the boat sailing in that I didn't appreciate things until I had recovered (I shot off to get a helicopter ticket to get back to Penzance, no way was I getting back onto that boat!!!). But once I got up to the heliport, you could see all the islands laid out below, and of course from up in the air it was fabulous. Only reason we haven't been back is because of dogs, but one day.......laughing

No helicopters to Scilly for some time now, though it looks as though they will be back next year, but these eight seaters still fly from the cliff edge at Lands End.

They do indeed! We often do a drive up to Airfield and watch them taking off....imagining the swoop down off the cliff edge! laughingGlad they are still there, but still think Penzance must miss it's heliport, damn sight more useful than a Sainsbury's! We used to sit and watch the Scillonian coming back as well, usually near Porthcurno, imagining every one heaving up as it hits those cross currents....I am the Worlds Worst Sailor, it was mill pond calm the day we sailed.....

Hampsons are nice and moist and peppery this year. I will admit though that the original Philps across the road from bookers are up there, different taste altogether from the pasty factory near the royal standard (good boozer).

Interesting info about the Scillies, we plan to visit this year if we can get enough time off. There are plans for a new heliport I believe, on the land behind sainsburys?

Marazion site (3ways) is still our favourite for our rest days, can't beat a stroll into the village for a pint at the crown

    JK

It's a lovely little site JK. Friends had used it for years and invited us down for a look. Back in the days before the back field had ehu points, so it was lovely and quiet. We did three years there, but then found a gorgeous CL close by and stayed there instead. Nice pubs though in Goldsithney!laughing

You definitely need to remember the cream and jam switch over when you come into Cornwall , we have had Lanhydrock-gate this week which made Sky and local news over cream teas. That is presuming you want to get out of Cornwall in one piece.
