I think that might be some time away, WN! With the weather as it at the moment, I'm finding it hard to get my head round the idea that it's the start if Spring!

If it gets too draughty, Goldie, you could always retreat to your caravan! The Alde heating in ours does a grand job and no draughts at all with the windows and doors all closed!

First drive of automatic this morning last drive of auto was about 30yrs ago,
,it was delivered last wednesday but has been in garage since then ,going to have towbar fitted,at our c/van dealer they are also a big trailer and towbar company,about 5miles from home

You have to open the water inlet tap on the onboard tank under the front seat and switch over to internal on the panel switch and it will draw the water in from the Aquaroll. It uses up over one 40 litre Aquaroll, so maybe about 50 litres. It lasted for 2 days.

It's a lot easier for urban driving when you have to keep stopping and starting in traffic jams.

I think there's a ski resort in Scotland and a site nearby that is open all year. I would think conditions there could be close to Arctic type weather to get enough snow on the mounntains for that! A caravan like ours with an onboard tank should be able to cope with such conditions. It is designed for all the year round usage.Ok how is it different in such conditions, when a Aquaroll is needed to fill the tank. Yours froze, the site tap froze, And the drainage pipes froze, hardly designed for all year round usage.

Snow has almost all gone just a few lumps left on the grass. It's does mean now that everywhere is very wet and muddy, not good for dog walking, he doesn't mind the mud but hates it being washed off afterwards!

My last four cars have been automatic. Two of them large 4X4's. Be interesting to know how you get on. I wouldn't volunteer to go back to a manual gearbox. Just a shame my motorhome is not automatic! Some people worry about them for towing but I would argue they are much better as it takes all the stress out of driving. Only downside is slightly higher fuel use but that depends on what sort of gearbox you have. Good luck with it.

Not all the site taps are frozen so you can fill the Aquaroll with water from an unfrozen or indoor tap and then fill the onboard tank before the water freezes. The Aquaroll is then stored away empty until the onboard tank runs out of water and needs a refill. The drainage pipes can be defrosted by a hair dryer because it's only the outside outlet that freezes which is a very small section of pipe. Most of the drainage pipe is inside and so does not freeze.
Even if all the outside site taps are frozen, you can still get water from the sink in the dishwashing area. That tap is indoors in a heated building that will never freeze. There are also taps in the laundry room sink that are indoors too.

For a truly "winter insulated" (as they call them) caravan you need to buy one of the expensive Swedish brands. On those, all the drainage pipework is kept inside the van until the last possible point, no waste pipes running under the floor.
Owners who then site them for winter sports erect a flat pack wooden "awning" , that is also insulated, and build in the underfloor area to prevent the wind from getting in there. Within that area any water or waste pipes entering/leaving the van can be further insulated.
However, most owners would not be using much water in their vans, certainly not as much as many here do as often the vans do not have dedicated shower areas, just the wet room type, so minimal use of water in the van.
For food prep and washing up they are more likely to use site facilities. Communal cooking facilities are often available too, some even provide dishwashers.
These vans will have on board tanks, but generally not as we know them. Often just a couple of smaller, removable water containers in a cupboard somewhere, and you may well need a hose pipe, or a watering can, to fill them from outside, like on many MHs. Aquarolls are generally unheard of.
For these seasonally sited vans, there are usually drains provided in the ground, these are installed deep enough not to freeze. Some sites also provide a water connection, though this is more difficult to stop from freezing.
