Campsite near Newquay.
Looking to travel from Scotland/ Glasgow to Newquay in August by Motorhome. Can any one recommend a camp site close to Newquay within walking distance or by using public transport.
Also any recommendations for a couple of stop overs on route to Newquay.

There are many sites around Newquay, our nearest club site is Treamble Valley but that is closer to Perranporth. There are a few folk that live in Cornwall that post regularly on here. Tinwheeler oe Eurotraveller to name but two. Also try www.ukcampsite.co.uk that has a good local serach facility.

I assume you mean Newquay, Cornwall rather than New Quay, Wales, Doug.
Newquay, Cornwall is quite a big place and you'll never be within walking distance of all of it from a site.
I'm afraid I cannot recommend a site as, in my opinion, sites near Newquay are to be avoided at all costs in peak season. I wouldn’t go near the place in August - sorry.
If it’s any help, when we travel to Scotland, we do near on 300 miles to Staffordshire in one go and then around 200 miles to Moffat on the second day.

It's a lot better than it used to be TW, back in 2011 we worked at Treamble Valley and the best Saturday entertainment on an afternoon off was the bus to Newquay to look at the worst of binge drinking Britain. Had a few days there last August and it was noticeably quieter, almost boring!

Newquay still is terrible, JK. Additional police cover, ambulances on standby.......
There are far better places in Cornwall, as you know. Your current site, for example, with the towans and beaches within walking distance (for most) and the town just a short drive away.
Actually, for MH-ers, Cornwall is a classic example of an area where a hire car or toad has advantages.

Hi Doug, if you are still keen to visit, and August in Newquay will not be to everybody’s tastes, then Trenance is the nearest site. It is within a short, but steep, walk of the centre however beaches are further.
Just looked at their website and surprised to see that they have space in August and a week in mid August was less than £130 but this may be due to not having a pool on site. Would be best to call and confirm price though as this may possibly be a per person amount.

I just hope we keep our local bus this year, it was touch and go last year. It's been difficult since the demise of western greyhound

its over 30 years since we were in Newquay so by the sound of things it has changed for the worse.
I looked at Treamble valley but was looking at that time somewhere closer to Newquay.
We are quite happy to try other areas in the Cornwall/ Devon area. As you have already read we are travelling from Scotland so we could perhaps try 2/3 sites but our preference would be within walking distance or public transport to a nice town.
Alan I’ll have a look at trenance site but not sure Newquay is the place to visit now 🤔
i appreciate all your comments as the last think I want to do is book a site to be disappointed by the surrounding area/town.

Doug, in your position I'd look for somewhere quieter than Newquay - if anywhere in Cornwall can be considered quiet in August. Adult only or non-facility sites, such as the club's Marazion site, are likely to be quieter.
Public transport could be a problem in a lot of the county. Do some research before you decide on a site, or consider hiring a car, is my advice.

The coast up and down from Newquay is lovely and of course the surfing is spectacular - it's just that the town centre has its problems. There are all night police patrols to deal with stag parties, under age drinking. hard drugs on sale, and last year pop up brothels as well - but that's just the town centre. Out of town the beaches and cliff walks are as wonderful as ever.
For families with primary school children I can recommend the campsite at Trewan Hall. It has a covered pool, acres of woodland and gardens, indoor and outdoor play areas, old fashioned children's entertainment such as story tellers and magicians, and local bands who visit. But it's 5 miles from a beach and 10 miles from Newquay town - so far more convenient for visitors with a car rather than for anyone with a larger Motorhome. It may interest others who read this, but it isn't what the OP was asking for. Sorry.

Doug, just south of Newquay a lot of people love Crantock and Holywell Bay, then there's The Perranporth area and St Agnes. All have something to offer and bus routes too. Fistral is the popular surf beach at Newquay and Crantock is close by but much quieter. Hope you find somewhere.

Nearer Perranporth, there are a number of good sites in the village of Goonhavern. Buses run to Newquay via Crantock and Holywell and to St Agnes and beyond (I think as far as St Ives) in the other direction. Good pub in the village and an excellent cafe/restaurant at the garden centre. There's also a CL at Reen Cross, a 15 minute walk from the village which always appears well used. Nearest to the beach, ignoring Haven Perran Sands which you definitely don't want to visit in peak season, is Tollgate Farm with a bus stop virtually at the entrance.
Not sure which route you'd be taking from Glasgow, but if coming down M1/M42 can recommend the CL called Gate Farm near Solihull for an overnight stop and maybe Exeter racecourse which is convenient for the A30 to North Cornwall.
Have fun choosing your route and stopovers and, of course, in Cornwall itself.

That's the route we use. See my earlier post re stop off areas. Aim to avoid the Brum area at peak times if you can.
You've had a bit of an eye opener regarding the number of sites, Doug.That's why it gets so busy here at peak times which is when we batten down the hatches and stay put.

As has been said everywhere in Cornwall will be busy in August. Treamble valley is about 5 miles from Newquay but a good 20 min walk to the bus and when it drops you back off you have to cross a very busy main road (good luck)
If you want a camc site you wouldn’t go far wrong with Godrevey near Hayle, bus stop outside lovely walks to one of the best beaches in Cornwall imo, a super site we used to stay at every year before moving to Cornwall.

OK - if you can make it as far as the Worcester area, there's a good non club site at Hawford just about 3 miles from J6 of the M5. Then a leisurely next day to Exeter area, or if you don't mind longer driving you could probably make it down to Cornwall in one go from there (but not at weekends!)

If you type in Wooda Farm/buses you'll probably find an answer, I just looked and the service is a bit limited but more buses available from Poughill.
For any local bus services in Cornwall just type in the place/buses and you should be able to find information.
If you want somewhere a bit quieter try the Roseland and club site, Merrose Farm, lovely safe beaches over that side, bus stop outside site.

My mil lived quite close to Wooda Farm at Poughill (pronounced Poffill) and I can’t imagine the buses run only to Bude, Doug. They’ll likely travel up and down the coast to other towns, such as Wadebridge, and inland as well.
Be aware that some of the lovely beaches on the Roseland near Merrose Farm are accessed down very narrow lanes where neither a bus nor a MH should venture.

That’s useful, Brue. Looking at it, there’s quite a lot to be said for staying somewhere central at the hub of the bus network and travelling out in different directions.

looking at the transport routes I think it makes more sense to go further South for better public transport.

I must admit I’ve been looking at a number of sites now in this area but I keep going back to the club sites. We do like our hard standing pitches in the club sites if available but not then we would be ok with a grass pitch.

If you like walking Doug you can walk across the road from Merrose and follow a path down to the coast path, nice walks in both directions. Portscatho has a good beach and there are pubs and a local shop or two. In the other direction the beaches near Nare Head are lovely too, nice food locally.
